"The following information on the Polish town of Bydgoszcz dates through the beginning
of 1954:
Introduction
"Since World War 11, 'Bydgoszcz has changed Its character completely. From being a
rather provincial.1own, it has now turned out to be not only the county capital but
also the seat of one of the four military district ooamaands for all of Poland.
"As a result of the many administrative oi'fiaea, the tows Ss overpopulated. In 1939,
there wore approximate.Ty 141,000 people; in 1953, ?there were approximately 1'(Q,000.
It must be mentioned that shortly after the war

former inhabitants of Warsaw who went there because of the few war damages suffered by
Bydgoszcz,
4. "Before World War II, Bydgoszcz was already quite a strong military area. This military
importance has increased since Bydgc:,zcz was made a Military District Headquarters.
5. "Froul an industrial viewpoint, beforo the war Bydgoszcz was a cantor for the wood and
food industries. It was also the site of some rather specialized types of manufacture,
as, for example, the plant producing railway signals ?- the only one of its kind in
Poland. There are rubber and cable enterprises >w still in operation .-a which must be
listed as important to the State. Recently a newlysbuilt factory for the production of
synthetic. tannieacids bas been added, also considered to have priority interest among
Poland's industries. All the industries are concentrated near. the railway station (in
the vicinity of which are located important military warehouses) and in the eastern
outskirts of the city, Near: Legnowo- arc) one of the largest Polish ammunition plants
and quite a nulrlber of big industriea enterprises. ..

6. "There have been no great changes in the road system. The town stretches along the
Brda River, and an east-west road system has developed which is considered as the
most important one in Poland at present. There are ionly slight corrections and im-
proverrents to this system which can now be observed,' as, for example, the bridge over
the Brda River near Armil Czerwonej Street.

It must be mentioned that Bydgoszcz was
made the county capital only after World
War 11. Before the war, the capital of
Pomerania was Torun. Consequently, there
is now not enough housing space, and
Bydgoszcz is one of the most overpopulated
cities in Poland. To overcome this dif-
ficulty, barracks have been built in
various parts of the city - primarily the
location of offices.
