1. Sightin!s: On .i13 October, 19 53 a ship7 believes to be a Soviet li;;iit crui: oil

of the Chapayev class., was sighted off Rica in the Baltic Sea, a:-)out !,0
miles north of it=a :~ei: (Subject vessel dead in water).

2. Armainent: Vesk,el was !armed with four triple turrets containing tins of
between v and! 8" caliber, and also carried numerous antiaircraft weapons
of about 3'? caliber.
3. Identification.! AlthnuLh no ensign was visible and no hull number was

e evidence, it iuibelieved that Subject vessel was Soviet because of its location
and because source was able to pick it out of OllI-F-31R.
4. Radar: Soarce comnenttd especially on the paucity of radar eduimant ??isibm.e,
not at al.l. corimensurate with a shin of this size. The only radar v .sible was
a small surfaced type, similar to that found on merchant ships.
