1. "Due to its geographical position, the island of HUM &S controls the entrance
to the Finnish Gulfj so the Soviets forced Estonia to surrender the island pen-
insulas of Ristna and Tahkuna to them for bases in 1939.
2. "At present the Ristna peninsula is separated from the rest of the island by
a barbed wire barrage which runs through the Palli gamekeeper's Sarm (west of
Luidja) . Civilians are not permitted to go west of this line. All civilians
havo been evacuated from the Ristna peninsula.
3. "During tub first Soviet occupation, (1939-Sept 1941), the Soviets began build-
ing fortifications and gun platforms on the western tip of the Ristna penin-
sula. At present, on this western tip, there is one 12-inch battery about 500
meters to the north-of the former Ristna farm, another about 500 meters east of
the Ristna lighthouse, and a third on the former site of the Kalana farm. There
are also, in the same area, six 9-inch and six 6-inch batteries. In the Kopu
region there are, further, two 12-inch batteries. Close to the Hiesto marsh
there are four starting ways for long distance [rocketjprojectiles.

field with two new barracks.
