"A difficult food situation exists today in Shanghai resulting in stringent rationing and soaring prices of foodstuffs. Scarcity of most on the market forced people to register a week in advance in order to purchase meat. The price of pork was prohibitive. Lard, oil and kerosene were rationed. Shanghai schools teaching Engliah for four hours a day were ordered to cut dowi the time to an hour daily. Other foodstuffs on the ration list in Shanghai are milk, sugar, tea, and other normal requirements, also, White Rice. Communist soldiers armed with tong guns patrol street corners in the city.
