In early Aug 1953, fire burst out in the attic- of the barracks of the 7th Infantry Regiment at Kolarovgrad. The fire was brought under control before it had spread very far. 2. There was a discreet inquiry. Political officers of the regiment could learn only that the fire was incendiary and was set by "enemies of the people." Several persons whc were interrogated were not seen afterward. This included some Bulgarian officers. 3. A short time before, the 7th Infantry had had to break off its maneuvers near Preslav, and return to barracks. The reason was that the horses of the regimental artillery and the supply platoon from the Intendance of the Army, had been killed. 4. In this case, the investigation was carried on with the utmost secrecy. Arrests did not begin till after the fire, which broke out after the regiment had returned from maneuver: its barracks.
