1. On permanent station in Constan~a are three Soviet motor gunboats, averaging about
2 guns, believed 7F mm-
3 guns, 37 mm.
4 machine guns, 2c us.
The crews vary from seventy to a hundred men. Speed of the motor gunboats is 22
to 25 knots.
2. There is _L: so a group of nine to twelve torpedo guard boats. These are of two
types: "Power", and a Soviet type.
a. The "Power" type is built of wood, displaces about 45 tons, has a speed of 32
knots. It-has three 900 hp. 12 cylinder Rolls Royce motors. It has four
torpedos, all in tubes, arI two r;unshields, to port and starboard of the
bridge, carrying 20 mm ma..hine gnus. There is a muffler to silence the noise
in case of attack.
b. The Soviet type is of metal, displaces 35 tons, has a speed of 32 knots.
There are three motors. The craft carries two deck torpedo tubes, launching
torpedoes from the stern. Some of these vessels are armed with "Katiusha"
rocket launchers, firing a 9 mm projectile with a length of 50 to, 60 cm. -

3. There is also a group of nine or ten "KFK? submarine chasers. These are captured
German vessels, built of wood, with 45. toes displacement and a speed of nine knots.
They have one 4-cylinder Diesel motor of 120 hp. There is one 37 mm gun in the bow
and each vessel has 12 antisubmarine depth bombs, German type, on the bridge. There
is also a "listening apparatus using emission of waves?, which is presumably radar.
Each carries a crew of sixteen to eighteen men.
4. The group of patrol boats totals seven to eight, displacing eight to ten tons each
with a speed-.of ten to fifteen knots. They are armed with light machine guns and
have crews of twelve men.
5. In addition to these vessels of the Soviet Navy, one also sees at Constan~a the
following Rumanian naval vessels:
a. Brig, Mircea, school ship.
b. Destroyer, Marasesti, 1,800 tons. Th13 has a sixteen-hour cruising radius and
a present maximum speed of 13 knots. She has two torpedo tubes, one forward,
one astern. Each vessel has two 88 mm_guns, for AA guns (37 mm), one AA
quadruple 20 mm gun, and six torpedo tubes in groups of three, installed amid-
ships. The crew consists of 200 men.
c. There are three Rumanian gunboatK., Stihi, Ghieulescu, and Dumitrescu . These
range between 250 and 300 tons with maximum speeds of 16 knots. Each has a 45
mm gun forward, another astern, plus two 37 mm guns and one 20 mm AA gun.
d. One torpedo boat, Sborul. This displaces 300 tons with a speed of 12 knots and
a crew of seventy men. It has two 75 mm guns and two 20 mm guns, all four
presumably machine guns, though source does not specifically so state.
e. One pilot boat, Duca, unarmed. This has two 75 hp. Diesel motors and a speed
of ten knots. It is assigned to the hydrographic service, marks mined regions,
places and keeps up buoys, and does various police services.
