JeAbout 400 Soviet ercops are stationed at the Hilbersdorf barracks, Chemnitz, i3b the p_?es;cnt time. They equipped with antitank guns, including many of about 100 mm cslihe-r. A field gun was observed of about 150 mat caliber with short barrel and muzzle brakes. About 30 guns altogether area in the shelters on the east side of the barracks; these are lighted at night. The total strength is about 250 men. In addition, seven self-propelled guns of fU 100 type have been stationed here since the end of the autumn maneuvers. No activities of these guns are observed at the present time. Exercises are held only with infantry arms in Kuchenwald Park and-71h the Zessigwald. 6. About 20 wooden cases, painted blue, were unloaded from a Soviet truck in Jagdscha.ukenstrasse, Cnemnitz, on 4 Dec 53. They are believed to have contained oxygen equipment. 7. The Soviet units quartered in the former factory building at the Scharzenberg (Erzgebirge) railway station received new guns at the end of Nov 1953. The old 76.2 mm short barreled antitank guns were taken away and replaced by 12 new guns of about 85 mm caliber, with muzzle brakes. The gun. carriages have exceptionally small wheels. 8. The telephone central of the Red Army in Leipzig is located in a villa in Richter- strasse at the corder of Prellerstrasse. 9. On 6 Dec 53, 120 families living in Wiener Platz, .eitz (near the barracks) were notified to evacuate their houses by 22 Dec 53. However, in consideration of `Christmas, the date has been postponed to 6 Jan 54. It is believed-that soviet families are coming to Zeitz. 15. Members of the new peasant settlement of 17eu-Breitenbach, bordering on the Zeit.z training grounds, have had to leave their houses and fields and go to settle in Mecklenburg. The training Lrounds are to be enlarged, and the buildings erected in 1947 by volunteer labor will be used in part as quarters and those farther out as targets for the artillery. 16. Soviet officers and soldiers have been visiting German families and making gifts recently.
