1. On 1 Mar 54 a reshuffle of the party apparatus and the various offices established
under Stalin was begun. The impulse for this came from !'I. S. Khrushahov; the
orders from the Presidium of the Central Comittee.
2. The purge is in the hands of -.D. Ignatiev, formerly Minister of State 'ecurity,
recently appointed to the Secretariat of the Partyslii a ?me or of the aleov group,
who seems destined for further promotion. It is directed primarily against
Molotovts supporters, and several of his followers in minor positions have alreauY
been dismissed. r. F. Trctiakov, Minister of Health, 44 was removed on 3 Mar 54,
was considerably mere than a minor figure, and was oneolMolotovts strongest
supporters.
3. The drive against Mc.1'>tcv, planned for some times has been intensified by Chinese
and German criticism of the w:.y Berlin Conference issues-Iwere handled. ?r. the
other hand Molotov is strongly backeo by the army, ,and it is unlikely that action
against him can be c;rried very far unless some downright failure in foreignthin
