oil, greasing the parts whioh are liable to rust, covering wheels, engine and
oookpit with oovers and fi.na.i storage of the the aircraft outdoors. To recondition
airoraft so stored takes three men four to five hours. When a rebuilt ongine
arrives it is covered v~rith a mixtu-?e of a rubbery subatanae and oil. This rubbery
subetan.oe, when combined with sulphur, is the material from whicl-. gasoline resist-
ant gasket material is made?

Maintenance Organization and Procedures
6. Tha following information on maintenance, organization and procedures is based
on 0 experience with PE-2 type airoraft. Each airoraft in a squadron is assigned
one technical officer, one senior sergeant, and ono junior grads unlisted man.
Every squadron has an inspec?L?iou commission consisting of the Squadron Erginooring
Offioor, the Flight Engineering Officer and one Technical Officer. In addition,
the Division En.~ineering Officer, the Chief Engineer and fo~~r or five teohnioal
assistants which make unscheduled inspections of the squadrons three or four times
a year. General maintenanoa work is done at the squadron level and specialized
work is performed i?.z one of the PARMS. PARMS era assigned to Regiments, Divisions,
and Armies in the following manners
Regiment -- PARM ~ 1 Airframe repairs
Division - FARM ~ 4 Painting? replacement of tubing,

Army - PARM ~ ll Major overhau'1 of a].1 components in-
eluding engines.
Each mechanic has his own tools but there is always a tool shortage. Special
equipment used for testing instruments, electrical equipment, etc. is u:.urLlly
available at a Special Equipment Shop.

7. Tho preflight inspection takes three man 15 to 20 minutes and oonsiete of removing
the covers, oheoking oil, h3rdraulios, water and fuel tanks, warming up the engines,
and a Visual oh9c:k for leakages. Ttio warming of the engine is done by an officer
of the orex, in those absenoo it is done by the senior enlisted man? After
inspootion, the Flight Engineering Offiaei? signs the release #or flight? After
flight, inspection plates and oowlinga are removed and a complete visual cheek
is performed on all acaesaories, attanhments, etas A?t the five hour insp?otion
the oil pan is removed and the crankshaft, connecting rods and bearings are
oheoked. This inspection takes three men about two hours to complete. Tho 10
hour inspootion includes the removal of valve oovers, chocking of springs and
c].eardnaes and the lubrication o.f control junctions cnd nropeller control. Threw
men work eight to tan hours or. this inspection. ~It the 25 hour inspootion fuel
tank oovers are removed, inspected for leakage, and cleaned, the magnetoes and
points aro cheokad and a complete lubrication is done. ?his inspection. takes
three men about 1F days to complete. 'Throe rnen vrork: -~;wo days completing the 50
hour inspootion whioh includes replacement of hydraulic fluid, removal of oil
tanks and cleaning and inspection by the squadron commission. Oil i.s changed
every 15 to l8 hours botWeen 50 hour inspoctionsa Tho 100 hour inspootion

to complete; an ongine change alone ePn be done in one day by three men. At the
e*;d of 500 hours, the airoraft is sent to FAP~R ~11 nor major overhauling.

9. The Aircraft Technical OFfioor keeps a daily record. ~uolosure (A~, of the
pre Plight and after Plight inspeations. The Squadron ngineeripg Offioar keeps
the inspection and maintenance records; the Technical Officer of each aircraft
maintains a Flight log. In the 9vent of amine or airframe failure, a Fte~imental
yr Laviaivna2 Inspection commission makes an examination to determine the cause.
An uns~t3sfaotory report is xritten and in some oases has resulted in the ground-
ing of all similar aircraft, these orders having been directed from Air Force
Headquarters ir, Ddosooe,
