In 1949 Soviet factories started :production of large :luantities of kitchen utensils manufactured from a metal which was alum- inum or an alloy .Jith a large percent of aluminum. Since that date, I noticed that pots, saucepans, frying pans, cups, plates, pitchers, teapots and coffeepots manufactured from this metal have become much more plentiful in shops in large Soviet cities. There has been a definite trend in the USSR to replace old- fashioned enamelware by this new kitchenware. I believe also that t}:e price of this kitchenware has been going down. In 19lr9 I paid 90 rubles fora 3~ liter pot; today the~same type costs Ia0 rubles. 2. T~ is lci?~chenware does not carry a trademark by which one could identify tl:e factory where it was manufactured. During the first post-war years I remember seeing aluminum kitchenw~.re ir}-ich carried t!-e trademark "Odessa...." TYe use of overt ' manufacturer's i:rademarlcs }gas been discontinued and replaced by a system of three or four letters which do not identify t},e manufacturer. 3. I have never heard, and I doubt very much, if this lcitchen- wr.ire is manufactured in aircraft factories. I am more ir:clined to believe that it is made in various kitchenware L'actories. Considering the direction from which these goods are shipped to Astrakhan' I believe that these factories are located in oblasts in central USSR, es, f~]oscow, Kharkov, Alovtorod, Gcrki~r. (I have also heard rumors to this effect.) I might add that in addition to kitchenware, many "aluminum" chilclz~en's toys have appeared on the r~:arket, recently. 14. I don't know to what extent aluminum has been stockpiled iii the USSR. -end- CLASSIFICATION SECRET/SLCU'HITY INFGRI~]aTION sT~rrc- x l NF} v y X FrE c. ~~ DISTRIDUTIQN [-fa ; M Y ~T f!? 11Z x -FTS i I ~C RR EV 25X1A 25X1A Approved For Release 2002/07/12 :CIA-RDP80-00809A000600020141-9
