of formerly having been "capitali~+.s", "exploiters" and"profii;eers" of their
employees.
2. The ovicers of the property to be discussed here are a married couple: husband,
68 - wife, 66. To be correct there are two grope=?ties, the one in the city
of l~eubrandenbti:rg anA the other in the country. Thd former doer not yield
any profits but carries the burden of taxation. It vas the maih source of
the couple's income ~t?1 1945. It was valued at 52 thousand marks sad con-
sisted of (e) haRSC and storage buildings and ('o) a somewhat larger building
for a ve].1.-gquipped ~abinp*nakrx'a shop. Part of the Furniture solZ vas
manufactured in the shop. A m~x~??r truck business so called "licensed goods
trar?sportation" vas attached. I.t operated athree-ton truck anc~. tva
trailers which were lost xithcet compensation to the "Aehrmacht" and also a
new "panderer" passenger car.. Al.l of the buil~l`ngs burned dour to the
ground. The complete loss incladed veluable home riu'nishings.
3. The property on which the couple i.s living now vas originally only a week-sad
lot, ~iic}z, aowever, oa account of a well-3~ept lake with good fishing and
also some hunting, did not require say expenses. To the contrary, it
brought some profit Erna the sale of fish and lobster. This property called
Hsrtvigsdorf am Kreuzsee vea valued at three thousand marks. Aster the
property is the city hed been lost, the couple natural7.,~ tried to use their
country property for both a home and a source of income.
4. Z:-ere is one morgen (0.53 acre) under cultivation sad also an area sat
under cultivation; like roads sand R ;hard. Th' home has a reed roof and no
'basement. It contains a three square yard porch, one heated bed~roam, one
unheated room, kitchen and taolreom. There i.s no bath, no toilet, no
electricity, no gas, no sewage aispoar~. The toilet is in the stsble

dogs. They are no worn allowed to be exported tti?om the Soviet Zone. In-
side the 7onc there is nv deman?i because oi' look of money and because hurt-
ing is prohibited by the authorities. FC'yerly, feeding for a thees-men+,h

quently a breeding pair could bring ay much a6 '_50G m~~kF a year. Today
~TTD~-member 19SJ costs are higher than income "tecause the ceiling is 50 marko
according to the motto "ilcg is dog". The villagr_ c:.u~s can easiy meet the
demands of the entire zone. More likely than not anyone wanting a dog can
get hicR for free .
9. The reasons for the continued keeping of t'r~ cockers are not only humane_
but also the alertness of these dogs. The farm is very lanecome; the next
village is over one kilometer a-aay. Regis :rat ion of dog breeding has,
therefore, not been cancelled. Far this reason Maur dogs cost as m+~ch in
taxes as one beeauae of the -taxat.ion laws.
10. Eight years ~,c an orchard was st.:~ted wiih approximritely 100 trees yielding
now a relatively good and valuab.F Drop, but the famous "Dog is dog" translated
into "F.ntl+, is fruit" prevents P fair return. There is a ceiling pri.cr~ on
t7?uit which must not be overstep_,cd in any case; cis a result the Host tray
can ge+, is 35 marks for 100 pounds.. The state-owned stores set' nn:rh high::r.
The state is the only one wh;, mar profiteer.

pike, tench and r:arp.
12. The lake was cell-kept; it has a +_:ood hard rooky bottom, good water and good
vegetation. In 1941 and 1942, c:.~ and two year old teaches sere put ia,
also carp and aae thot.sand tre_~. If this is done eery four or five
year~e, uniform yield can be erpe~`?ed (carp nee3 not be put in thin frequently).
but to 1945 and 1946, the Soviets by means of bac~ba, bazoogas aLd cluster
charges, made an end to the fleb~r. '?n the lake, including the young Dees and
the lobsters. To bring the lake bark to production it mould be neceaaery to
(a) atop fishing entirely for some time, and (b) put in new fish agr+in end

13 . Disregarding the ac:tusl condition of the lake (counting on thr size of the
lake Daly) the owners must deliver 10 eWt ~f fish per year for which 20 ?
pfeaaigs a pound is paid; 20 cax'ks for a hundredweight. If the obligaxion
is not fulfilled, expropriation is threatened, not of the momentarily

thaw the .-Pld? Consequently, the onl;~ thing ?ie can ~3o is to buy the
fishes a# 3v marks rear cut and still them for 20 ~.rks. The master fisher
bas re#~ased to do the fishing for 30C marks wage becm:.,e of the lake's
rocky boitom Which would tear up his lar.~e net valued at four thossand
marks. Regarding delive:cies of fishes to the state stares, thy: same motto
"Dog is dog" or "Fruit is fruit" appears as "Fish i.s Pi:~h", except ?or the
fact that the state atones know luxury :'ish when Welling them at a srire of
six to ten marks a kilo (ivo pounds) fu:? which they pay a maximum ~t^ 40
pfennigs per kilo.

pondingly higher. Trausgortation is 10;{, of the price oa the average, but
only the higher priced. luxury Pishes cue actuall}? available. Even ii' one
assumes that conditions wiL be better after five or six years, it vouid
still be impossible to restore the lake with fish because nobody in the
Soviet 7AnE can aPPord to tie down money without intereet for five or six
years.. 6f course, the age of the cvaers has oleo something to fio vith this.
They w111 probably be unable to do the hard vork five or six years fYom nov
and will have to go to a home for the aged.
15? The Pu'.loking figures for expenses e.nd 'income are of the last year (1951)
(first comma) (second column, green in German original is sleet Germany).
They are, therefoz~e, partially incomplete For tht year 1952 but prices have
remained uuctaaged. 't'hey should, therefore, represent a true picture of
this year provided no losses fi'rom diseases of the animals occur.
