THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION
1. The status of pharmacy in Ir,-n is nearly as good as the US, except there is very
little research done. The knowledge of drugs is modern due to the extensive cam-
munication of the medical doctors with other countries.
2. The oupply of drugs has been ample. Many drugs are made locally, particularly
elixirs and syrupb of all types. Many arc rcmpounded from raw drugs imported in
balk. The manufacture of DDT is e recent addition to the list of locally made
items. No e.ntitiotice ere made but are imported in ample quantity from the US
and UK. _
3. Prior to WWII, Germany supplied a large share of the drugs and the majority of
the surgical instruments. Many of the surgical instruments are ?.till in use.
Also, n few drugs, such as aspirin, are still being used from the stockpile
brought in from 0ermaav prior to the war.
4. Soviet drugs have been readily available but are little used.
:Ln ar2g one hospital in Tehran. There are no Soviet wholes err ma u sin ng
supplies, and never seen any Bales literature. The drugs offered include
penicillin and the sulphas. Soviet drugs are generally considered inferior.
5? At the suggestion of a Soviet representative, one tired

the maximum daily does. The drug was administered at the maximum but no results
were obtained. When advised of the result a, the representative advised he use 50 to
60 grams daily, "Then it is not a drug. It is a food".
The most popular countries for foreign Bch ling are Franc,
Germany, and UK.
7. Iran has a pharmacopoeia printed in both Persian and French. While not as extensive
as US pharmacopoeias, such as Merck Index, it is considered adequate. It is edited
and kept up-to-date by a group of professors.

8. Al]. the narcotics used in the US are used in Iran, Opium is commonly used
professionally and its use for other than medical treatment is a major civil
proolsm.
