Marshal Zhukov, who is BalgaalI $ deputy, grew up with the Soviet regime. He developed and trained under the direction of such Soviet military specialists as Tuhachevakv. Taorov. ha o nik v etc. I believe he went through general staff training in Germany in 192 or 1925. He is a most determined, able officer and a commander who is capable of executing any assignment without further direction. He always solved problems placed before him from above all by himself. On the other hand, he possesses many characteristics and traits of a person striving to attain higher goals. He is very ambitious, possesses a strong will power and great military talents. As a division commaz>.er, for instance, inukov was ratea as one of the beat and his star began to ascend during the conflict with Japan in Outer Mongolia in 1938. He really carried out a most astounding operation there and was able to bring the "undeclared war" to a speedy conclusion. After this Zhukov-s rise was unchecked. During World War II he stood close to and distinguished himself near Moscow where the Germans made a major break through. He was one of the organizers of Moscow's defenses and handled his task very well starting in Moscow and ending in Berlin. 3. The Soviet government df.d everything in its power to surround Zhukov"a name with an aura of a hero. This was essential for the soldiers" morale during the crucial days of World War II. Thanks to the Party and government support artu his personal qu"ties, Zhukov reached the post of the Commander- in. Chief -1 the Front with and Lam serving under him. 25X1 stop for anything. many generals who were afraid of ihukov%s ameba 25X1 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/07/21: CIA-RDP80-00809A000600040366-2 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release SEc?ET/SECUTaTI INFDRMATION more than anything else. Zhukov never hesitated to shoot anyone personally for ure TO car,-,y auo his orders during the war. Everyone in the army knew it and was afraid of him. tin the other hand, Zhukov was liked by his subordinates because there was iron disci- pline in his units which in turn was responsible for less dishonesty among the supply element and better food for the troops. Ids soldiers were well aware of it and knew that Zhukov was demanding not only toward them, but also toward the officers, which made him popular with the troops. 6. Zhukov's stature, equals that of Tuhachevsly, Blucher or Egorov -- he is a national figure who could capture and lead masses -- which is very im- portant in the Soviet Union. He also is a person around whom there is a legend of invincibility and his opinions are always respected in the Soviet Union.
