a. The more important and authoritative body of veterinarians is, of course,
located, within the Narodni IComissariat Zemlyedyel (Itinistry of Agriculture,
referred to as I~tarkomzem). Narkomzem, 24oscow, assigns a chief veterinarian
to each of the republics. Veterinary inspectors of 27arkomaem are dispatched
throughout the republics, ablasts and raycns. each oblaat and rayon is
assigned a veterinary. The district veterinaries are provided with mare
?facilities and in most cases each rayon has a Yeterinnrnsys Itiyechebnitza
(Veterinary Hospital). The rayons are divided into uchxstka (smaller 7.and
areas) which do not rate a doctor of veterinary medicine, but are assigned
feldschers.
b. Narkom Sor-klxoz (ISinistry of Sovkhazes) has its aywn vuteriaariar.~ which it
assigns to the Swkhozes throughout the iSJ'ii.
c. Yarkom 2;yesnoye Proryyahlyenost (N.inistry a? Meat InBustry) assigns its own
veterinarians to slaughter houses where they serve as meat inspectors.

b. In disease control. in the iSS$y certainly in ;qy regioa, there were two
parallel groups involved:
. (1) ZootEKaicbiskaya Rabota (Animal~Husbandry) was responaikrle for food,.
plsnning for livestock, for animal huabandrgj and for available statistics
on the number of eaimals expected to be born. It was also responsible for
aufficien~. stables ahd'corrai.a iar Lhe i3rasTOCa.
d. The forces of the Red'Army and the i~RVD have their own veterinary departments.
e. In addition to the above, the I.linistrv of Transport aasi.gna its own voterin-
eriana to :najar shipping junctions within the USSR. Whenever livestock is
transported from one sector of the US:R to another' a livestock inspection i?a !
held and a bill of health issued by the Diatriot Veterinarian. However a
subsequent eammination of the livestock is made at the junctions by the
i3iniatry of Transport veterinarians.

e. At oblast hendquarters, there were approximately 30 DVMs in 1946. He,adquartera
used to assinr. them to positions in the field.
b. The University of Samar?akand had a faculty of 15 professors, all doctasa oS
veterinary medicine, whore primary concern r~:ts teaching, but they did some
research.
c.. The IJauchno.Sledstvermy Institut (the Scientific Research Institute) employed
10 llVi?is who devoted their entire time to research in infectious animal diseases.

a. The oblast and Iiarkomzem had a large district veterinary diagnostic laboratory
at :iatta Kurgsn, Uzbek, USSR.
b. There was another diagnostic laboratory at Harshi. TA3a laboratory prepared
e serum SZHYK - Sivorota Zerobyk Kobyl, a serum taken from pregnant mares.
This sRn.un was used in accordance with the method of Zavodovaki to produce
multiple birth in karakul sheep.
c. All drugs and instruments required for veterinary use in the Samarakand Oblast
were provided by a district supply horse, referred to as Rayoniy Snabzhezi,7e,

a. The nnyoniy Vrnch, who was responsible for control of infectious diseases ir.
his district, would rake a yearly plan for such control. Upon aompletion.,gf
