OF PAGES 4 SUPPLEMENT TO REPORT NO, THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION 1950 FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION VOLUME OR GDR M .MD WATERWAYS This report consist' of a table based on two statistical reports dealing with the 1950 freight volume on the inland waterways of the German Democratic Republic One of these reports, hereafter referred to as Report A, was entitled Gueterverkehr auf der, Binnenwaseerstrassen der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik lm 3ar-re 194 ' fFreight Trarf'_c on the Inland Waterways of the German Democratic Republic in 1950) It was published by the Central Statistical Office of the State Planning Comnjseion and vac based on data furnished by the Directorate General of Water Transport The other report, hereafter Report B, was entitled Graphische Darstellung is- Transrortolanabwicklimg 1950, Reichsbahn and Schif-- fahrt ;{,rar.h,c Fresentaticn cf the Development of the 1950 Transportation Plan for Relchpbahn and Water Transport) and was compiled by the GDR Ministry of Transportation It covered railroad as well as eater transport statistics, and it may probably be assumed that the data on water transport volume was furnished by the Directorate General of Water Transport, vh?ch is directly subordinate to the Ministry cf Trans crtation The commodities covered is the two report- do not rc^incide completely, Report A giving a more detailed breakdown in most in- stances, The table SO .a-t -- -.o?? t i-11- up ci,e =-screpancies between these two reports, both cover _n.g the sane eubje.t, during the same period, apparently from the ha-sic data, and thus serve as an example of the 11mI.tetions of certain statistics n_ublished in the GDR and the necessity for using them with caution It may als.:, b" helpful for evaluating Inland. waterway capacity in the GDR. Report A refers to Report B, mentioning that the latter is based on-data of freight dispatched (whereas Report A lists both freight dispatched and freight received). It explains the difference between the two reports on the item cf total freight volume (11,765,738 tons, as comparcd\to 1?,309,510 tons) by pointing out that Report B does not include transports from West Berlin to the Western occupation zones and to foreign countries, nor transports from these areas to West Berlin It also includes only incomplete data on freight received in the GDR from the Western occupation zones and foreign countries and on transit traffic - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/06/14: CIA-RDP80-00809A000600140212-1 Sanitized Co roved for Release 2011/06/14: CIA RDP80 00809A000600140212 1 N .eY,, "1f r&o-~ gpcdy.
