2. "Stalin" Dam on the Iskur River south of Sofia. The largest in Bul-
garia. Will be put in full-scale operation at the beginning of 1956. By means
of an irrigation network it will service the entire Sofia region (about. 500,0C0
der_ares).
3. "Topolritsa" Dom near the village of Gabrovnitsa on the Topolnitsa.

The waters of the dam, flowing along the Batak Waterway and augmented by other
waters of the system (average annual spillage: 260 million cubic meters), is-
sue into the Maritsa River valley west of Pazamrdzhik. Here, by mcazs of si-

500,000 decares of land in the region of Plovdiv and Pazard-zhik.

lies in Dimitrovgrad. The basin has six pits in operation. It also embracer
the coal deposits near the villages of Merichleri. C:irpan Okoliya. and U..arir,-
ovo, Khaskovo Okoliya. Average calorie content: 2,500.
This basin form-- a triangle with Nova Zagora, Sliven, and Gabrovo at its
points.

To improve the quality of coal for industrial purposes and railroads,
the Central Coal Washing Factory was built and put in operation in Dimi-
trovo at the end of 1953. To increase the production of coke, installa-
tions near Gabrovo and Plachkovtsi have been expanded, and one such instal-
lation is under construction at the "Cherno more" Mine in Burgas.

"Lom" Mine near Lou: on the extension of the Danube River (lignite).
"Vrushka chuha" Mine near Kula (anthracite).
1. Plan Basin. The largest and richest ore deposits in Bulgaria. The
beain fore. a triangle with Ziatograd, Rudozem, and the village of Ardino at
its -:,juts. It lies along; the ':..'ter course of the Ards River, southwest of
Kurdzhali. The ores are rather rich. Chiefly lead and zinc, and some copper
and silver.

Prospecting for oil is under way in the oil fields near Shabla-Balchik-
Kavarna. Installations are under construction. A refining enterprise is
under co-atruction near Provadiya; at present, the oil obtained in prospect-
ing drilling Is refined here.
An installation for the production of synthetic gasoline is located in
Burgas.
