(1) The asenaption of a nearly IAazwelllan distri-
bution of velooities, with the field-parallel con-
ponent small is compared with the Roan velocity, proved
to be valid for eleaorons even in strorgelsotrio fields,
brt dose not hold for positive gaseous ions. This 3m
due to equality of the'ordere of magnitude of the siis
of ions and atoms, but msigIr to the predcmiant role
played by the transfer of electrical charge between
ions and atoms. With the simplifying asscnptioa
that this charge exchange process Sa the only signifi-
cant interaction, that its probability is iadependenh
of the velocity of the ion, and that thermal velocities
of neutral atoms are negligible, and ion is seen to
conserve its velocity after ndutralisation through ex-
change of charge with an atom, and the latter new Lou
to start its action along the field with zero k1aecic
energy. This representation leafls to an expression for
the mean velooiyy of ions~ llel to the field, V
d?5 z 103 (UJA 1/2) (E/P)l/2 where U F ioniastion
potential of the atom, A its atomic weight, E a fisid
intensity, P r pressurd reduced to 00. The derivation
!avolves the appran' l'r+ expression for the effpctive
orris section for charge transfer Q = 1.88 z 10fli2,
strictly valid at high reloolties; at low velocities,
Q cannot be considered constant but must increase with
'I ; also, direct elastic exohnnge of energy on
collision becomes sigatfioant. As theue two effects

tend to counteract each other, caapensation results
and the above-given expression for if becomes
applicable not only to strong fields, but also in
the case of relatively small L/P. This ah ks with
the proportionality between J and (1/P)1/2 observed
by K. KingdeR'and 2. Lawton, for E/P from 20 to 6,061
v/cm/sas W. The experimental value of J. = 105 am/see
for E/P a 1,000 cheeks with the oal.c. latbd 'L' : 1.05 x
105. The foamula consequently can be expected to hold
also for fields of the order of those.of the plasma,
100 v/001/ma Ng. (2) Angular distribution of the
velocities in shown to be sharply aniootropio, unre-
lated to any Maawsllian distribution and to the very
concept of temperature.
