Instead of the expected 128,000 carloads of rye, only 98,760 were harvested, or 77 percent of the plan. In- stead of 916,000 carloads of potatoes, 467,776 carloads were harvested, or about 51 percent. Instead of 483,000 carloads of sugar beets, only 2W,7 carloads were harvested, or half the expected quantity. In livestock production, the plan was fulfilled inadequately in the first half of 1948- thus the production of beef in Csechoslavakia in the first 6 montbe of 1948 was 46,327 tons, in contrast with the expected production of _aver 80,000 tons, that is, only 58 percent. If one takes into account 1,359,597 cows (officially announced 1 July 1948), and adds the 208,996 hectaliters of milk, the estimated amount need by calves, It is possible to estimate the over-all production of milk at 1,755,393 hectalitere, a daily average per cow of about 4.2 liters. From January to the end of July 1948, 9,059,027 hectoliters of milk were produced, that ia, 1,806,667 hectaliters less (16.6 percent) than In 1947 for the same period. SUGAR I1S -- Lidove Noviny, No 249, 23 Oct 48 On 21 October, there were 61 sugar refineries in operation in Bohemia, 21 in Moravia, and four in Slovakia: a total of 86.
