Instead of the eltpeoted harvnt of 147,0CA carloads of wheat in 1947,
only 88,360 were ha vested, or 58 percent. Instead of the expected 128,000
carloads of rye, only 98,760 were harvested, or 77 percent of the plan. In-
stead of 916,000 carloads of potatoes, 467,776 carloads were harvested, or
about 51 percent. Instead of 483,000 carloads of sugar beets, only 2W,7
carloads were harvested, or half the expected quantity.
In livestock production, the plan was fulfilled inadequately in the first
half of 1948- thus the production of beef in Csechoslavakia in the first 6
montbe of 1948 was 46,327 tons, in contrast with the expected production of
_aver 80,000 tons, that is, only 58 percent. Produption of park was 71,382

According to a report sent by J. Durie, Minister of Agriculture, to Prime
Minister A. Zapotooky on the progress of the harr9sting of bey and fodder, and
the autumn field work, up to 26 Bepteaber 1948, the hay harvest In the Czech
Provinces in the interior was carried out 100 percent. In tha'bordor districts,
cc? the entlrs area of 275,107 hectares, 272,867 hectares or 99.1 percent were
reaped; 272,1423 hectares. or 99 percent were harvested. In harvesting, only
2,210 uateres remained to be harvested.
By 26 Sertoober, 147,299 hectares of Iate potatoes bad been harvested, that
is, 46.2 prcont of the entire area to be harvested. On,, : housend two hondrod
bedtbreia or sugar beets, 0,0 percent, 32 hectares of chicory, 1.3 psroent, and
6,153 hectares of food beets, 5.9 percent, had alto been harvested.
Plowing is 81 percent finished in the Czech Provinces, and fall plowing, to
the extent of 552,919 hectares, which is 21.2 percent. As for winter sowing,
98,647 hectares of rye have beep.sown in the Czeoh Provinces, or 19.8 percent of
the plan; 49,589 becterec of wheat, or 10.8 percent; and 14,200 hectares cf
winter beets, or 94.6 percent.

PRODUCTION OF (MILK IN JULY -- Lidova Demnkracle, No 222, 23 Sep 48
In Czech territory in July 1948 on an average day of milking, 3.7 liters of
milk per cow were produced, that Is, 30.8 percent leas the. before the war. If one
takes into account 1,359,597 cows (officially announced 1 July 1948), and adds the
208,996 hectaliters of milk, the estimated amount need by calves, It is possible
to estimate the over-all production of milk at 1,755,393 hectalitere, a daily
average per cow of about 4.2 liters. From January to the end of July 1948, 9,059,027
hectoliters of milk were produced, that ia, 1,806,667 hectaliters less (16.6 percent)
than In 1947 for the same period. In July 1948, 868,63.3 hectolitere of milk and
77,688 kilograms of butter were delivered to milk collectors. In oomperieom with
June, this was an increase of 69,303 hectoliters or 8 percent. From January to the
and of July 1948, 4,848,969 hectoliters of milk were delivered to milk collectors,
that is, 984,170 hectaliters (16,9 percent) less than in the same period of 1947.

There ware officially 7,979,430 hand on 15 July 1948. Theme hens laid
101,761,337 eggs in Ji,ly, according to official statistics. The average collec-
tion from each hen was 12.8 eggs in July. In comparison with-the average ccli.eo-
tion in July 1947, the July 1943 collection was greater by 1.6 eggs.

In Czech provinces In Jape 1948, according to official data, 38,614 head of
cattle, 36,539 calves, 94,614 pigs, including suckling pigs (23,554 were slaughtered
domestically), 975 sheep, 550 goats, and 1,191 horses were slaughtered- In all,
172,483 animals were slaughtered. From these animals the following amounts of meat
were obtained: 68,874 quintals of beef, 12,910 quintals of veal, 185 quintals of
mutton., 8ti ;aintals of goat meat; 2,384 quintals of h reesieat, 12,746 quintals of
fat, and 2,082 quintals of beef, mutton, and goat tallow!.

According to a report by Engineer L. FreJka,director, national economic
section, Chancellery of the President of the Republic, in the first months of
1948 only 58 percent of the beef quota, 54 percent of the pork quota, and 62
percent of the milk quota were produced.

On 21 October, there were 61 sugar refineries in operation in Bohemia,
21 in Moravia, and four in Slovakia: a total of 86. About one half of these
plants exceed the norm in aompetttion, not only in output but also in eoonomy
and quality: of production. The sugar refineries have undertaken 24 million
q:~intals of beets. More than 7 million quintals of beets had been processed
by 21 October.
