Even though stress- relieving annsallng of cold-worked
crystals was general], found to result in a lowering
of the yield point 7, renevvd rise in Yon further
annealing at a higher temperature (7800 for AI01)

tween inner elastic stresses and strength was sought
by measurements on calcite crystals where twinning
In plaatio deformation, resulting in enhanced strength,

(3 3 x 4 to 7 x 9 mm) ooinoiding with the symmetry
plane of the twins, were subjects& to deformation
resulting in a twinned layer along the orove section.
The yield point Y was determtr..ed by aioroseopio
observation of the twin layer under increasing lands;
the sans deteraiaatioa was repeated after annealing.
Obly ink cases out of 24 did Y remain u+tahanged;

these cases include anneals from. 12 hours at 4900
to 10 minutes at 2200, rate of cooling 240-3200/
hour.In all the remaining oases, Y rose after
annealing, the ratio of increase being for exaspls,
1.51 (5 minutes at 4600), 3.5 (8 hours at 4400),
and 4.3,5.35, 5.69 (fromn 40-50 to 185-262 SAC
re) for three "lee treated together (7 boors at
5100). There is no explanatitA for the unchanged
Y in five cases, nor is there any obvious relation
between the change in Y and the conditions of
annealing. It has, however, been established that
annealing of twinned calcite never results in a
lowering of Y art mostly raises it. The residual
changes can only be located at the boundaries be-
tween the twinned layer and the unaffected part of
the crystal, That the latter are ant acdifled was
demonstrated by restoration of the original condl-
tion thro-agh reversal of twinning and subsequent
renewed twinning deformation, A new twinning layer,
produced after annealing of the original one, shows
the usual low Y, about 100 6/s4-w? as e
with about 300 for the annealed Sayer.
