COAL PRODUCTION UP TER PXRCINT -- Soanteia, No 1299, 11 Dec 48
The Minister of Mines and Petroleum announces that the production of
coal for November Bas 3 percent above the quota, representing an actual in-
crease of 11.3 percent over that of October. The but records were estab-
lished by the ainerai of Baia Mona who surpassed their quota by 31 percent;
the miners of Biger, 21 percent; the miners of Lupac, 14 percent; the miners
of Comanesti, 11 percent; and the miners of Sorecani, 8 percent. The Soviet-
Romanian Group use 2 percent above its quota. Production of the Petrosani
aims of Vales, Jiulul was 3.3 percent over the quota due to tae use of mate-
rials and tools imported fray the USSR awl the introduction of Soviet methods
of w.Tk.
The production of the Gold and Silver Administration was up 15 percent
and that of the mines belonging to the Administration of Ferrous Metals was
also above planned production.

The Bohitu-Golesti mines (Muscel Judet) have attained their production
quota ahead of schedule. At the same time, the preliminary work for more
extensive mining of the region has greatly surpassed its norm.

The foundries of the Twenty-Third of August" Metallurgical Plant have
shown a surplus of 8 rercent in production of steel, 22 percent in production
of cast iron, and 49 percent in production of non-ferrous metals over the
quotas for November. A surplus of 12.5 percent was recorded for all foundries.

The Administra;ian of Ferrous Industry has awrded the November pro-
duction banner to the workers of the Huaedoara Metallurgical Plant's steel
foundry. This section surpassed its quota by 49.57 percent and reduced
unexcused absenteeism to .02 percent.

During November, the production program of the Section of Ceramics and
Building Materials showed a surplus. The planned production of cement was
surpassed by 18 percent; blown glass, 50 percent; lime, 52 percent; gypsum,
1 percent; porcelain, 50 percent; bricks, 150 percent; tile, 47 percent.

Construction of the buildings of the refractory material plant in
T uda has been completed, and work has been started on the first of two
furnaces. The only plant of this type in operation at present is the snail
taste .tion of the Mesita" Motallargioal Plant, which is too wall to meet
Ruasaian iaidurtrial requiremsats. Upon completion, the Turda plant will
produce thousaa a of tons of silica bricks annually, and obviate the neces-
sity of Importing this material.

The production goal for 1948 in the cement industry had been surpassed
by 15 percent at the end of November, according to a report of the Ministry
of Industry.

At Bala de Fier (Oorj Jndet), the production of graphite for the
period from 1 October to 6 November 19k8 was greater than for an entire year
when the airs was privately owned. Since nationalization, the sine has been
under the quarries section of the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum. The
previous, primitive methods of mining have been r placed by modern, mechnnioai
assns, and open-pit mining has been abandoned in favor of shaft mining. This
mine is the only graphite mine in Rania. The graphite contains up to 70
percent carbon.
