The following figures indicate too tremendous cultural development of
Priaorskiy Bray in 1948.
Six 'one new schools, of which 17 are 7-year schools, were created. The
number of students inureaaed by 22,600, and the number of teachers by 730.
Among the teachers, 384 received their higher and secondary pedagogical edu-
cation in Primorekiy tray. Seven hundred new students were admitted to
pedagogical and teachers' institutes and pedagogical higher schools in 1948,
a considerable increase over previous years.
Movie theaterb in the Kray gave 62,067 performances., 22 percent more than
in 1947, and the performances were attended by almost 8.5 millidn persons.
Twenty-five thousand movie p2orfcrmanoes were given in rural areas.
Libraries of the Bray received 1,038,000 rubles worth of periodicals.

The VMU and MU are exclusive (zakrytyy) educational institutions where
students live at the school and are provided with meals, uniforms and
monetary allowances. The VMU accepts male citizons of the USSR from 17 to
24 years of age who have completed secondary school education, and the 11U
accept8 male citizens from 15 to 20 years of age who have had the equivalent of
7 years of secondary schoo' and who pass the entrance examinations. Appli-
cations for admission should be sent direct]?- to the institution by registered
litter, and should include the usual documents, certificates, and a 3tatanert

The Main Administration of Educational Institutions of the Ministry of the
Maritime F*'n net USSR announces admission of students for 1949 to higher ocean-
navigation schools (VW) and to ocean-navigation schools (MU). The higher
ocean-navigation schools are located at 15-a Eosaya Liniya, Vasil'yev&kiy
Island, Leningrad; 13 Didrikhson Street, Odessa; and 50-a Verkhne_Portoy ya
Street, Vladivostok. The Leningrad and Odessa VMUe train engineers In ship
navigation, ship mechanics, and electromachanics. The Leningrad VMU also trains
radio communication engineers. The Vladivostok VMU trains engineers In ship
navigation, ship mechanics and ship-repair mechanics.

The Blagoveshchensk River School is admitting students to the first
course in the extension school department for the 1948-49 school year. The ex-
tension school department trains river-fleet pilots, technicians for inland
waterways, and ship meobnnioe (stokers), In a 5-year training period.
Applicants =et have completed the 7th grade in secondary school and must
have had at least one year's experience In river transport work. Intranoe
examinations will be given to the Russian language, mathematics, and USSR
Constitution at the school or at the nearest secondary sobool. Applications
will be accepted until 10 February and dlaeses start on 15 February. Appli-
cations and documents should be sent to the school, 1 Torgovaya Street,
Blagoveshchensk.

Navigation Training School No 7 of the Ministry of Labor Reserves has
been reorganized into the Navigation School of the Ministry of the Maritime
Fleet. All organizations having claims against School No 7 must present
them by 5 January 1949.

The Nikolayeaek Ocean-Navigation School, made famous by Admiral of
the Fleet Stepan Oeipovich Makarov, is now housed in a 3-story building with
30 .classrooms, and is equipped with laboratories for the study of ship's
machinery, electrical engineering,physics and chemistry; a social and economic
science study row, and training vorkshope. The school now has 230 students.
