On 20 January drilling began on a new owl well near Oko, between Tainan and
Takao (Kao-heiung). Drilling has extended to a depth of 2,500 motors, and prog-
rams thus far is reported satisiactoiy. If oil ie found, Taiwan refineries will
not have to depend on the 200,000 to X00,000 tons of Arabian crude oil now im

A pipe line carrying 7,000 tone daily has been installed; it connects the
Ehneu, and 50 percent more than the amount produced under management of the
Japanese Navy. Tta refinery aaploys 170 technicians. Wong Wen-hao recently
spent 4 days at Takao directing the refi.Lery'e operations.
The Takao Oil Refinery has stepped up its production to 10,000 barrels of
42 gallons each per day. This refinery supplies 25 percent of the nation's oil
oonemption. Depending on the market, it can increase production to 24,000
barrels daily, which is five times the output of the Lao-chun-miao refinery in

In 1943 t:.e entire refinery vat swept away by a flood caused by melted snow
floving into the Shih-yu Ho (Kerosene RI-ier) which bordered the plant. A new
plant was built at Ssu-t'ai in 1945, with a pipe line 387 kilometers long. New
cracking equipment wan installed in 1946 and aiditional equipment in l948, mak-
ing the refinery the beet in the nation.
In 1949 it is planned to drill iE na-r wells in the Lao-chun-miao area. In
May 1948, this field yielded 800,000 gallons, Sufficient to meet the needs of the
entire Northwest.

The refinery is organized into varicus technical and administrative depart-
wents, employing 63 officials and 683 workmen.
