Czeohoelovak a'e coal mines require 2,500 new workers each year to re-
place those retiring from work. The drlje for workers in 1948-49 not with
an Incredibly poor responce.
Despite the fact that 20,000 long-term brigade workers help out in the
mines each year, they cannot re,laoe experienced miners; in fact, it seems
that they cannot be counted on.
Mining apprentices have a good life. They are boarded in convenient
dormitortee, fend en masse, and supplied with a work-suit each: In ',b3 near
future, rubber shoes and flannel trousera will be unrationed to %hem, Win-
ing apprentices receive 480-500 crowns pocket money monthly in the first
year, with bonuses which may be as high as 500 crowns monthly. The appren-
tioe cru theraby learn to cave money.

At present, the age limit fcr miners is between 42 and 45 years, which
intenailiee the importance of the problem of arousing int.ereat in mining as
a profession among young people. last year's ranruitraent was unsuccessful.
Instead of the expeotad 2,200 apprentices, only 1,100 applied.

The Justice Adalnietration ha.: r3leased 573 employees in the Czech Prov-
inces for productive labor, which .roe 10 more than their quota which was to
be fulfilled by 15 March. A number of employees, inoluding 19 employees of
the aeurte under the jurisdiction of the Eras Court in Karlovy Vary, volun-
teered for productive labor.

:ilecolate industry, and a full 75 percent in the production of natural min-
eral waters. The fish industry has 65 percent vemen, the fruit and vegetable
industry 61 percent, and the tobacco industry 60 percent.
