THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION NOVOSIBIRSK CRITICS CENSURED -- Sovetskaya Sibir', No 48, 11 Mar 49 More than 500 writers, artiste, journalists, painters, composers, Party and soviet workers attended a city-wide conference of art and literary workers in Novosibirsk. Poat Alekeandr Zharov gave the main report which dealt with the recent article in Pravda on the group of artipatriotic theater critics. Author A. Tioptelov gave many 4xwiplea of the influence of such critics In Novosibirsk, mentioning Al'tman, Gurvich, Dreyden, and Dsyredzhiyev. The latter began his attack on Siberian writers in an article Puflty of aeethetioism "Siberian Literatur* in 1941" in which he criticized Gavriii Sungurov'e novel Putesheetviye v ititay (Journey in China). Dayredzhiyev also wrote erroneous articles for the almanac, eyyye dni, as a member of the editorial board of the almanac. In 1948, there appeared an article by Zinoviy Shatrov (Shteymen) in the pariodioc,l Sibireki;e i_ an S. Sertakov's narrative "Plot Idet na sever" (The R-ft Goes Northth). The editors failed to sea through Shteyman'e opinioms and permitted the article to be published. Again, the editors were guilty of liberalism by permitting the publication of a speech by the poet Antokol'akiy who defended formalist verses by Lev Kendrrev. Lieutenant Colonel Vysotekiy pointed out the erroneous criticism recently appearing in Sibirakiye ogni and in the newsparer Sovetskaya Sibir'. The latter published an article in My 1945 by N. Larionov which gave a favorable review of Tristan i Izol'de by A. Brushteyn which vas presented at the Youth Theater by gins Meyerkhol'd. V. Levashov, in his speech, declared that the formaliet:o critic Vay.top not only spread his false conviction in Novosibirsk during the war years but also headed the local department of the Union of Composers. Lavrent'- ycv stated that he was completely at fault for felling to understand the social and political significance of the latter play and is g?a.teful for the criticism he received both in Pravda and in Novosibirsk. He stated that he now realizes that all criticism in the press must first of all present a political appraisal of a work. S. Kozhevnikov, editor of Sibir9kie aEX:i, admitted that workers on the periodical have shown lack of vigilance 10 pe'mittt g the publication of articles by antipatriotic writers. The painter, S. Belogolovyy, spoke of the injury- dct c t.: Siberian art by such critics as Lekht. N. Lerionov, on the staff of .`}ovetakpya Sibir`, admittec? the e^ribus errors in his article 'Theater Notes published in the newspaper no 24 May 1946. He pointed out that the statements were false because th_qpraieea w-z--> ern and slighted Soviet playwrights. On 27 January 1946, the newspaper nubliehed a review by Yep ignat'yev (the pseudonym under which L. Varshavexiy hides) of the play Za tekh, kto v more (For Those et Sea) by Lnvreate of the Stalin Prize B. Lavrenev. In the review, Varebavekiy attempted to criticize the play for Its timely Soviet theme and to slander its kassian naval heroes. The editors of the newspaper made a serious error in publishing Varehavekiy's reviews. Ye. Shteyn, art .lirector of the Russian Theater of. Drama, upheld Varehavekiy's criticism of Lavrenev's play in an article published in Kazakhetanekaya Pravda an 21 September 1947. Shteyn also criticized A. Surov's play Deleko of Stelingrada (Far From Sta.irgrad), in a r.viev which used Yu. Yuzovskiy's critical formula. The M-.::rkh Peadeny Theater of Drama should have held the center of attention of the theater critioe, but they never made a fair appraisal of its activity. A review, by N.
