SUPPLEMENT TO
REPORT NO.
Huai Zhiza', (Science and Life), no 8, 1948.
1. In 1947, Soviet geologists and oil engineers discovered and investi-
gatel a nummber of new oil-bearing regions. The new llyzylagaohakiy deposit,
which was discovered very close to the Neftachalinskiy deposit, will be ex-
ploited through deep drilling. The highly productive Sazanbulagskiy deposit
in Airovabad rayon has just 'been put into operation. Through this, a start
has been made in establishing a new oil-extracting center in Azerbaydzhan.
New oil deposits have been discovered in the W ykop layer (Nrasnodarneft').
Gushers came in from now deposits for the first time in the Izberbaahekiy region
by efforts of the Dagneft' trust. A new gas deposit was discovered in the
Bsiesh section (Malgobekaeft' trust). New oil prospects were discovered by
deep mining excavations in the Nebitdagskiy area (Western Turkmen).
2. A plant for liquefying Saratar gas, with underground tanks for liquid
methane, will be constructed under Nos-,ow. In the summer, when the demand for
gas is low, the surplus will be stared in the underground storage. In the
winter, when the demand increases, the liquid methane will be released into
the city's mine through gas-distributing stations after its conversion into
gas. This will assure a steady supply of gas to the population am enterprises
of the city throughout the year.
3. Water jets were u3ed on a caisson used in the construction of a large
railroad bridge. The suing of the caisson was done by loosening the bottom
with water jets produced at high velocity, and considerable pressure by a speosal
device, the hydrumonitor. Water is also used to rem s the and from the bottom
of the caisson to the surface through a hydroelevator.
4. The Stendartstal'strol Trust is arc welding nonferrous metals with
a copper electrode in the usual altercating-current welding devices. Torch
welding is cnatumril.y employed for this purpose, but it requires highly
gmlified workers, scarce equipzvnt. and complex apparatus which cannot al-
ways be obt+~iad in construction areas or field workshops. Arc welding vitL
a copper electrode is distinguished by the simplicity of preparing the electrode,
the eatieiaatc-y qua'ity of the welded seam, and the possibility of rapid
maintenance, and recandit.onina of machinemade from brrnze with a small
maintenance o0et.
