Hormone and organotherapeutic preparations used for the treatment of
illnesses resulting from disorders of the endocrine glands formerly were
tported from abroad. Now they are produced in the "Prolek" (Medicine)
,,_tory in Belgrade.
The pro&untion processes had to be developed from the beginning; the
factory bad to bo built, technical processes discovered, formulas worked out,
and raw materials (glands and other animal organs) procured. Glands for
processing must be properly removed, wall-cleaned, and very carefully
preserved. Obtaining glands from slaughtered aaimle was a new task for
Yugoslav slaughterhouses, and it required great patience and skill. Diffi-
culties were' encountered in Lranaporting frozen glands from the various
parts of the country to the factory in Belgrade.
Through good labor organization and adequate procurement of raw
materials, the factory fulfilled its first-quarter 1949 plan by 330.5
percent in value. During this period, sufficient pituitary glands, whidh
last year had to be imported, were obtained from Yugoslav oources. Prom
these glands a pituitary medicine for treating internal bleedings end a
preparation for treating asthma are prepared. A method for removing
pituitary glands easily has been discovered.
Production at the factory in increasing rapidly. The organcthara-
peutic section was formed last year. At that time, the technical proo-
esces were not well understood, but by the first quarter of 1949, this
was the best section in the factory.
