The Sverdlovsk and Sverdlovsk Oblast machine-building industry produced
many new machines and other products during 1948. The Uralmaehzdvod (Ural
:i-ohine-Buildi Plant) increased production of large excavators 200 percent
and introduced new highly productive machines for the mining, metallurgical,
and cement industries. Nizhne-Tagil railroad car builders put into mass
production large-capacity freight care.
The agricultural machine-building plant produced tractor-drown tree-plant-
ing machines, five-bladed tractor plows, and other agricultural mechanical
equipment. The electric industry plant brought out new improved high-speed
hydrogeneratore, high-freq.ieney generators, and new electric welding equipment.

pleted 4ts 1948 program ahead of schedule. It exceeded ite production plan
for machinery, increasing output 54.7 percent over 1947, and 220 percent over
1940. Planned output of metallurgical equipment was achieved. Net costs 'iere
to-ere& 19 percent and 23.3 million rubles were saved abcee plan.
The turnover of working capital vas -.ccelerated, Tn 1940; each ruble of
working capital resulted iD. oi.e ruble 17 kopeks' worth of production, out in
1948 this i s raised to 2 rubles 29 kopeks. One complete turnover of working
capital amounted to 307 days in 1940, but only 157 days in 1948.
As u result of the standardization of a amber of ')arts and units of pipe
rolling mills, the plant was able to produce simultaneously complete units and
parte for these macninee. Mecka.nical casting methods brought economy in the
production of caterpillar track platen, ex.avauor scoops, etc.
There arv some serious production difficulties, Uralmsehzevod is to re-
oeive bearings from the Sverdlovsk Bearing Plant, but the latter's production
has not as yet been organized. As a result, Uralmaehzavod must o?etain bearings
