BELORUSSIAN SCHOOL SYSTEM EXPANDS -- Sovetskaya Belorue?iya, Ito 17, 25 Jan 49
The prewar public school system of Belorussian SSR hod been almost com-
pletely restored by the beginning of the 1948-1949 school year. There was a
considerable increase in 7-year and secondary schools over the 1947-1948 school
year. A greater numbe._ of children were enrolled in the public schools. Reg-
istration for the 1948-1949 school year increased 48 percent over the 1947-1948
school year for classes 5-7, and 33 percent for classes 8-10. In 1948, 1,358
more diplomas were presented than. in 1947. The total number registered in
workers' schools in 1948-1949 was 27 percent higher than in 1947-1948.
Beloruesiam higher educational institutions have been completely restored.
The number of students enrolled in them in 1948 was 14 percent higher than in
1940. Highly qualified specialists graduating from Belorussian higher instiLu-
tions in 1948 represented an increase of 66 percent over 1947.
The number of students in technical schools and other specialized secondary
educational institutes amounted to 106 percent of th',ae enrolled. ir. 1947.

At the begs-ming of the 1948-1949 school year, there were 16,161 more
students enrolled in elementary, secondary, and ineonplete secondary schools of
the Latvirn SSB than for the 1947-1946 school year. There were 452 more students
In technical schools in 1948 than In 1947, not counting those in correspondence
courses. A new theatrical institute was opened in Riga in 1948. The number of
students attending higher educational institutions increased by 622 In 1948. The
number of correspondence students increased by 1,154 In higher educational insti-
tutions am by 340 in technical schools.

The number of students in primary, incomplete secondary, and secondary
schools in the school year 1948-49 increased by more than 30,000 students over
1940. Fifty-three new schools were opened in 1948.
The number of students in higher educational institutions reached 6,000 in
1948 and exceeded the 1940 number by 2,000, The number of students completing
higher schools increased almost 100 percent over 1947.
The number of students in technical schools and other secondary specialized
training institutions reached nearly 10,000 students in 1948, exceeding the 1940
number 4.6 times. The number of students completing technical schools and other
secondary specialized training schoolm in 1948 increased 5.7 times over 1940.

Kazakh State University imeni S. X. Kirov was founded 15 years ago. The
university has highly qualified scientific and pedagogical personnel, well-
equipped laboratories, a library of over 200,000 volumes, a botanical garden, a
zoological museum, an astronomical study, and a biology station.
The number of departments and chairs has increased steadily and at present,

cialiste are trained in 20 different fields. Scientific research work is done on
37 main subjects. Two new departments, philosophy and econo ics, are to be
opened this year.
The univerelty now has over 2,000 students. In 1949, 158 students will
graduate from the university, and in 1950 the number of graduates will increase
to 360. In the future, the yearly number of graduates is to be 500-600, and
the total number of students is to exceed 3,000.

the USSR, 17 to 35 years old, graduates of secondary school, must pass entrance

The Ministry of Nigher Education T8R has decided to open deps-tments in
the pedagogical institutes of Moscow and Leningrad to teach translation from
Russian into English, German, French, Spentsh, Ital'an and Swedish.
A translators' department is also being organized in the Moscow Institute
of Oriental Studies to give training in translation from Russian into Chico as,
Japanese, mongolian, Persian, Arabian, Turkish, and the language of India.,
The Philology Department of .Leningrad State University will have a depart-
ment to teach translation from Russian into other Slavic languages.

The Pyarnu Navigation School of the Ministry of the Maritime Fleet is
taking applications for 1949. Tne school trains seamen and stokers in a

graduated 2,500 railmri transport specialists during the 7 years of its
