A special committee of the Academy of Sciences USSR has begun work on
the csbetitution of Russian terminology for foreign terminology in the fields
of mathematics, physics, ch-mistry, eni other sciences in so far as this
terminology Is coon for all branches of science. This program is designed
to replace nondescriptive foreign words with Thi eira nomenclature. Work along
this line, so far amounting only to reocsmendations, io also bel.ng done in the
Technological Institute imeni Leringradbkiy Sovet in Leningrad.

A scientific oonferen.o took place recently in Kiev at the Scientific
Research E-ray, Radiological, and Oncolugical Institute. It iae attended
by we11-1mown specialists of the Ukraine and other republics, ineluling the
noted seian.det V. N. Ivanoy, corresponding member of the Academy of Medical
Sciences DIM, Professor K. Y. Kewesh of Leningrad, A. A. Lemberg o: Kharkov,
V. G. Ginsburg of Moscow, R. Ya. Gasul' of Odessa, and others. About 250
physicians and medical workers tcok part in the conference.
The conference discussed a new so.-bod of X-ray research called hceto-
fluorography developed by engineer M. S. Oroehehnikov, head of the technical

separate layers of the human body.
A. F. Makarchenko, Vice-Minister of health Ukrainian. SSR, opened the
conference and spoke of the great Importance of the new X-ray method for
medical practice.
LENINGRAD ENGINES ASSIST PLANT FOUNDRIES -- Trud, No 106, 7 May 49
on 6 May, representatives -)f chairs and departments of 10 Leningrad
scientific and planning institutes, including the Polytechnical Institute
imeni Kalinin, the Engineering and Economics Institute imeni Molotov, the
Metals Institute, and others, met to discuss the first results of the co-
operation between institute engineers and innovators in foundry press shops
of Leningrad enterprises. Workers of the Affiliate of the All-Union
"Orgtrazhwasu (Organization of Heavy-Machine Building) Institute are assist-
ing in modernizing equipment in five large turbomachine-building plants.
They are mechanizing the charging of heat-treatment furnaces, have nubetitut-;i
more accurate and economical stamping for free forging (svobodnaya kovka), aria
are decreasing tl,e norm for fuel and metal consumption. This type of work is
also being done in the Plant imeni Karl Marx and the Plant imsni Friedrich
Engels, and other enterprises. The achievement of A. V, Potekhin of the
"Svoboda" Plant, the first to accomplish combined stamping and forging in

The Main Administration of Geodesy and Cartography, Council of Ministers
USSR, has published many new geographical maps. Large editions of a multi-
colored political map of the world and a political-administrative map of
the USSR have been published.
A new edition of the historic- map "The Great Socialist October Revolu-
tion and the Triumphal Advance of Soviet Power" is being printed.
