Since the "democratic personages" who have been staying in Hong Song left
for the north, Hon;; Kong's political arena has been somewhat deserted, but as
far an Cfemuniets are concerned it is still an important political center. Not
only is antigovernment propaganda still an important bucinese here, but Hong
Song is also a focus for liaison with the British and for sui.-zvieing party
work in the southern islands So Hong Song's political significance has not
been diminished. Below are sketched some of Hong Song's leading Communist
personalities.
1. Liao Ch'eng-ohih (Ueda: 2982, 3690, 3179)
Mao Tse-tung chose this nimble, canning, and self-indulgent, yet
versatile, man to direct Party work in South China. He has been Party Secre-
tary of the Communist Party for South China for the last 10 years, and Is a
party member of 20 years' standing.
He Joined the Party In 1925, when a student at Vaseda University in
Japan. In 1928, he was sent by the Party to organize the seamen in Hamburg
ant Dutch ports, where he had much success. On returning to China, he was
often arrested but repeatedly escaped. After 1932 he gave up propaganda work,
devoting himself to army political work. He became head of the Central
Committee's pubUoation bureau, and chief editor of the Liberation Weekly.
Because of his feiiliari;y with English, German, and Japanese, he is highly rc
aerded by Mao Tae-tang.
Liao, now F3, ham a promising future. He is a candidate for membership in
the Central Committee.
2. "Red Nose" (8739, 14809, 2262)

Ch'ao-an Peasants' Council.After the IT-CCP split, ho engaged In underground,
activity around the East River, where he organised guerrillas during the Sioo
team, he assisted in removing certain Communist brigades from Kwangtung to
Shantung. In the last 2 years, he has been planning military, campaigns in

This man's real name is Ch'iao Ku.an-hua (1425, 646,9921). A native of
Val-heing in Kiangeu, he to now 35 years old. He is very 'tall, with pale white
cheeks, so people at once recogaize,him as a typical pale-faced scholar. Although
he now holds a rather important position,inthe Communist party, he;is not at all
arrogant in manner, but will go-informally to a friend's for a chat, and it, is
generally said that he is'quite an advocate of freedom.
He is a brilliant thinker and an acoomplished linguist, being familiar
with English, Frenoh, Japanese, Belgian, and Russian. At present, he is an
important writer on international problems for the Communists., With this natural
capacity, he is of course a power In left-wing circles in Hong Kong.
He is also at home in military matters, having taken part in the Spanish
civil war'. His wife, Sung Pleas, (14882, 6572) is also very versatile, 'having
been at one time private secretary to Chou En-lai. She is now in England doing
