On 9 September 1944, Bu1?nria, economically backward, primarily agri-
cultural, am heavily damaged by the war, was producing at 64 percent of the
1939 level for imustry and 70 percent for agriculture.
In 1948, only 93 percent of the industrie production plan was owgileted
but production had increased 75 percent since 19,19. Heavy industry had in-
crossed 123 percent, and light industry, 55 percent. Through reclamation,
53,100 hectares of land were recovered for cultivation. Agricultural pradnc-
tion had increased as foll7we: cants 99 percent, livestock 61 percent, and
forestry and hunting 170 percent. Production of lumber for building had in-
creased 53 percent. Seventy-me machine tractor stations were opened, and 84
state fares at more than 1,000 cooperative farms were founded. The milroad
net bad been increased 13 percent. Wholesale and foreign trade had passed
entirely into the hands of the government. Over 72'billion leva bad been
invested in the national economy, and construction use developing rapidly.
Strikes had been eliminated, and wages had beam increased by acme than 39
percent.
