LEADERS AND ORGANIZATION
The Armed Forces of the C( have been known by varioue names. In the
days.of the Iiengei Sovi.,t they were kmava as the "Red Army." During the war
of resietanne they were reorganized and renamed the Eighth Route Army and Nov
Fourth Army. Since the war they have all been called the "People's Liberation
Arty."
In the system of organization, the People's Liberation Army is directly
under the dentral Revolutionary Military Council of the CCP. Mao Tee-tung
is chairmen of this council with Chou En Lai and Chu Toh an vice-chairman.
Chu Tab is also Commander of the People's Liberation Army, with P'eng Tab-huai
as Deputy Commander, and T'eng Tai-yaan as Chief of Staff. These are the top
military laadera of the CCF.
The political commissar system is still preserved, but now the military
leaders hold the real power and the commissars no longer have the right of
final decision. The Chief Political Commissar at People's Liberation Army
hoadquartera is Jan Pi-eh1h, and his deputy is Li i'u-ch'un. In the general
political;-section, the chief is Van Cheng, the deputy Chang Chi-ch'un.
