The night high-altitude jump made by a group of parachutists of the Moscow
Central Air Club tReni V. P. Chkalow on 22 June set an all-Union record. The group
was made up of six seen and and womma, each of vhori has wade oeooral hundred June and
four of whom had jade a night jump from 6,680 meters with oxygen equipment. Prepa-
rations for the jump were under the direction of Glob Osval'd, trainer and Master
of Parachuting Sport of the USSR, and Dr Tevgeniy Peshkov, Lieutenant Colonel of
the medical service. During the preparation, the parachutists were put in pressure
and temperature eheabers in which conditions similAr to those at an altitude of
10,000 - 12,000 meters were simulated. After grout,:. training, the group made a
number of test jumps with oxygen equipment.
The plane left one of the airfields at 2345, BY maintaining close radio contact
with the designated landing area, the crew' navigated the plane to the correct poei-
tion for the jump. The parachutists jumped one by one, beginning at 0120, from a
height of 10,200 meters, with the temperature at 53 degrees below zero. They landed
in 16 - 18 minutes and were picked up by planes and delivered to the airfield. A
careful medical observation of the parachutists indicated they were in excellent
physical conditiun,
All the measuring instruments used in the flight, inolu4ing the barographa of
the parachutists, have been sent to the Central Air C1ab.in Moscow to be studied by
a special commission which will make close observations of the res ltn of, the jump.

been good.teachers and have failed to give the midshipmen well-rounded training
in being ship's officers, rather than simply navigation specialists.. -- Rear
