Ye. N. Iiharadze, head of the Astronomy Department of Tbilisi University
and director of Abastimiani Observatory, recently received the degree of Doc-
tor of Physicomathematical Sciences from Moscow University. His disserta-
tion dealt with chromatic characteristics of stare and absorption of light
In galaxies.

Academician Tyacheslav Petrovich Volgin was awardwd the Order of the
Labn. Red Banner on the occasion of his 70th birthday and in recognition of
many years' scientific and pedagogical activity.
The Academy of Sciencos Kazakh SSR opened a conference in Karaganda
cn ]7 Juno, devoted to problems connected with the study and utilization
of productive forces of Central Kazakhstan. Academician N. I. Satpayev,
president of the Academy of Sciences Kazakh SSR, opened the conference with
a short introductory speech. Rsporte were read by T. I. Ababkov, secretary
of the SaragandR Oblast Party Committee, A. Yegorov, Doctor of Ge,logical
and Mineralogical Sciences, N. G. Kass'n, active member of the Academy of
Sciences Kazakh SSR, and A. D. Daulbayev, Minister of Agriculture Kazakh SSR.
Scientists of Moscow, Ioningrad, Sverdlovsk, aad other cities of US12,

An expedition of the Botany Institute of the Academy of Sciences, .Arme-
nian SSR has returned to Terevan. The, group of scientists, headed by Prof
D.`Soenovski, visited Aparanskiy, Spitakakiy, K.travakenskiy, Alaverdskiy,
Sbamehadinskiy, Id.hcvanakiy,and Kraenosel'5kiyrayons where they conducted
research and collected specimens of Armenian plant growth'. The expedition
discovered 40 large areas distributed with plants of sconomic,importance,
suitable for iA ocurementof seeds of trees and shrubs,, and areas with medic-
inal and decorative plants., The expedition also ^,ollvcted 11500 different
