highways and y57 highway bridges repaired between the winter of 1948 and
June 1949, national ar_d provlnciel highways in ftorth China reachod a total
length of 22,700 kilcmieters. This represents a 48-percent increase over
that in apeilation under the Nationalists.
The main hig'lvays running north and south are the Pei-p'ing -- Han-k'ou,
Pei-p'ing -- g'ai-fang, and Tien-thing ?- D'u-s'cu '~ighvsya, and those east
and west are the Hen-tan -- 'Ch'aug-chip nd Pei-p'ing -- Suiyuea highways.
These main highways end their bseacn Liuee coane.:t many coal mines, farming
areas and cattle raising areas in North China.
Reports Eton Oh'9ng-te indicate that highway repairs in Jehol Province
have bean progreaainEt rapidly, and there are nrxi over 26,000 Englleh miles
of passable highways 1n tbie proviuca connecting thtl Northeast with L1o??th
China.
