Shoatakovskiy, Laureate of the Stalin Prize, has found a substitute for Peruvian balsam and suggests that it be used In therapeutic practice. The first tests have shown that the substitute, "vinylin," now called Shostakoviar. balsam, is not only the equdl of Peruvian balsam, but has even better therapeutic action against rar-caln diseases. The Ministry of Health USSR has ordered .z numb5r ct uherapeut"r institutions of Moscow and Kiev to conduct a clinical check of the biological properties and therapeutic action of this substance for certain skin diseases, trophic sores, burns, fresrt-I 'c, and purulent wounds. Results of those tests were presented a. a meeting of the Presidium of the Scientific Medical Council, Ministry of Health USSR. A. P. Bazhenova, co-worker of the surgical division of the Hospital imeni Medsantrud, reported that the balsam was used in 118 mastitis, phlegmon, and carbuncle cases. It prcved affective against pathologic conditions and promoted tissue regeneration. Active epithelization was noted during the latter half of the treatment period. Prof N, N. Priorov reported similar results in the treatment of soft tissue traumata aml septic wounds, Do-tcr K. M. Izhevskiy reported on the action of this balsam in skin diseases. she noel favorable results were obtained in the treatment of carbuncles and furuncles, and partially favorable results In the treatment of rashes. This balsam does not 'produce the secondary action characteristic of Peruvian balsam. Results obtained over several years recommend its use in all cases with erosive and ulcerous de eatosis. Prof L. A. Koreysha reported on tests conducted at the chair of microbiology of the Ce. tral Institute of Advanced Training for Doctors. The bactericidal properties of the balsam were proved.
