ELTTISR CONDITIONS P'OR PEASANT FARMER -- Rzeczpospollta, No 220, 12 Aug 49
One of the basic policies of the government is to assure prot_tnble farming for
the small and mediuT farmer.. The decisive factor, of course, is the price of
grain. The price paid the Parmer by the State Grsnariee or the eubardinate cooperatives
le established by the government, which ie guided by considerations of profit.
Since the area sown {n~rPased this year by 500,000 hectares and oultivaticn has
improved, it is expected that the harvest of this year x111 be greater than that of
last year. For the first time 0ince the xar, the harvesting of a sew Drop is in
progress while there ~e still a considerable grain reserve trams the previous year.
On the Soreige nar:::;to the r: Sce of amain is falling. 'Phis would have been a
catastrophy before the xar, since Poland was last on the list at exporters with the
low hvel of Polish farm econam~y.
This year, the domestic price is not affected by siach domestic o?' international
conditions. With a desire to benefit the national economy and the people, the government
not only has not loxered the price but in same cases has even raised the price of
grain. The price of common wheat has been retained at 3,200 - 3,300 zlotys per
100 kilograms. The price for No 1 grade wheat hse bean raised to 3,~i50 ~ 3,550 zlotys;
for common barley, frog 2,000 to 2,100 zlotys; and for No i grade barley, to 2,500
7~loyze por 100 kilograma;,f~or buckwheat, to 3,00 zlotys>
+~~
Another indication at~the interest of the government in the welfare of the ?sll
and medtum farmer was the recent reduction -- from 8 to 30 percent depending on the
eq~tipntent -- in t1-e price of agricultural machines sad eeui~ment. For instance the
Pioneer potato digger was reduced from 32,000 to 22,000 zlotys.
