IN SOUPH KOREA! ARi4F
Test October, the troops belonging to the South Korean 36tixsral Dv,,fer.:a
Forces stationed in Yosu, Sunch'on, and Taegu revolted in apposition to 8yngaan
Rhee'e puppet government. In May this year, braving brutal suppression by the
reactionary ASmy and. Navy of South Korea, two uottelions in Ch'unoh'on and
Hongch'on, Kangwon Province, deserted to the North, followed by the No 2 Special
Service Ship of the South Korean Navy anchored a0 Pusan.
In ord6r to cope with the situation, Syngman Rhee discharged the Chief of
Otaff, Ch'ae Bycng-tok; ordered a genera]. shake-up of regimental ccwr Mere;
discharged the commander of the 8th Regiment to which the above mentioned bet-
talions belonged; and finally, proposed a resignation an bloc of the cabinet.
What are the facts behind these desertions by the South Koreas troops? One
reason for the internal diessneicn of the National Defense Army is the fact that
the army's higher echelon, under the auspices of the American imperialists, is
composed of former high-ranking officers of the Japanese Army, such as Kim Sok-
von, Ch'ae Pyong-tok, lee Wong-Jun, Lew Chae-humg, etc. On the other hand, the
lower echelon is composed of man who were forced to join the army. Their reason
for being in the military service is not patriotism but circumstantial necessity.
Although outwardly they are bound into unity by force, inwardly their interests
and thoughts are in opposition. The South Korean eoliiere invariably detest
their leaders, who are traitors of the Korean people.
Syngmn Rhee not only collaborated with these traitors and organized them
into the army, but also he used Japanese military advisers. Be organized the
so-called Educational Inspection Unit, as suggested by the American imperialists,
and laun'hed a general military purge. As a result, over 3;600 officers, non-
coamissioned officers, and enlistees were arrested and imprisoned in the military
prison in Yongdungp'o, Seoul. Among the mer in his army, this action provoked
great reeontaent toward Syrgman Rhee. Furthermore, Syngaman Rnee thus exposed
himself to intense public odium.
