The lakes in the Berabinek Steppe, Novosibirsk Oblast, could provide a
yearly fish catch of m0tny thousand centners, double the amount now caught
by all fishing enterprises un the ltu[,e and by the local population. Due
to the lowering of the rater level between, 1925 and 1945, particularly in
the Bol'ehiye and Malyye Cheny lakes, the fish industry has gradunily de-
clined. However, beginning n 1945, the :limatic conditions of thA steppe
have undergone a marked change. The climatf' of Siberia, particularly of
Vasyugan' and Baraba, became more hu_xid, and the waxer level of Chany Lake
rose almost 2 meters, providing highly favorable conditions for rapid mul-
tiplying of the main specif.a of fish (.roech, brew, and ide), The'fiab
catch rose sharply in 1948, During these years, there has been a decided
increase in Balkhr>eb carp In Lake Sartlan en". is bream in Take Ubinekoye.
These developments point to rapid multiplying in the local species of
fish and the potential development of fisheries to the maximum degree. The
development of the fish industry in the steppe is of prime !iaportar-ce to t1,9

Booorodskove-on-Elmer -- A large group of workers from the southern
regions of the USSR have arrived for work as fishermen at the Mariinekiy
Fish Plant. The ;few workers, arriving at the height of the season, were
imwediately put to work, and in a few days developed a number of leading
fishermen :n their group.

Forty-nine fishing brigades under the Minletry of Fish Industry,
garelo-Finnish SSR, are competing for an earl; fulfillment of the 1949
ran. The Petrozavodak Fish Combine bao achieved the best results, having.
fulfilled the yea- plan 147.2 perceaL in 6 months. The fishing brigade of
Vygozerskiy Fish Plant .lee also been ?.ery successful, having completed the
year plan 114.7 percent. ^wenty-six brigades have eviceedcd the 6-month
plane.
WHITE GRAMPUSM CAUGHT IN CR'JMIBAN BAY -- Vechernyaya Hosiva, No 166,

Chumil:an, Nizbne-Amur Oblast -- Schools of bbite grampuses have
appeared in Chumikan Bay and fishing brigades have begun to operate in
this area. One brigade caught 80 grampusee on the first day, with a total
weight of 480 centnere.
WHITE GRAMPUS FISHING IN THE WHITE SEA -- Leninskoye Znamya, No 142,

During the suamier months, large sahoole of white grampuses have appeared
in the YuL-ovo area of the White Sea. Fishermen of the Collective Fishery
ineni Yalevala ,augbt 40 grampusee in a short time. Over 6 tone of meet
were delivered to the collection center.
