MUCK TIMBER FLOAT35D ON KSM-1 RIVER -- Leninukoye 7mamya, No 152, 3 Aug 49
The Kem' River Is the greatest log-floating base in the Karelo-Finnish SSR.
More than 600,000 cubic meters of timb,111111 are floated on It. Floating operations
on the river are divided into three stages. In the first stage, timber is floated
out, sorted, and sent to the Bab-gub log-rolling base (].esoperevalochnaya baza) and
to the Kern' Snvmill. Floating during the second stage is outstripping the time
schedule. Sorting operations at the Kem' log block are also going well. Never-
theless, timber is not being sent to the coneumore (the third stage) according to
plan. The Bab-gab log-rolling bags has hauled out of the water only 90,000 of
the 327,000 cubic meters of timber set by the plan, although the logging eeaecr
is already hall over.

been completed at present. The 11 kilometers of track scheduled to be laid at
the Sidiminakiy logging camp have not yet been started. Logging camps have made

departure of many workers upon completion of their contracts. Almost 400 seasonal
workers do not wish to prolong the term of their contracts because of the housing
shortage. The excostive yearly turnover has led to a deficiency of skilled man-
power throughout the management, and much time io lost in training new workers
each year. Galionov, director of the management, and Trotsevicb, chief of the
capital construction division, have donc nothing to improve the aii, uation.
Another serious shortcoming of the timber management is the lag in housing
construction. Only 20 percent of the plan for housing construction has been
completed. Every year, the management has a lar
