In 1949, the sown area of the USSR exceeded last year's area by almost
6 million hectares. The sown area for spring wheat Increased by 1.6 million
hertaree. Potato planting increased by 386,000 hectares, cotton by 183,000
hectares, long-fiber flax by 381,000 hectares, hemp by 94,000 hectares, sad
sunYloverc by 280,000 hectares. The aree.for annual and pereaulel grasses,
fodder roots, and ensilage trope has aiso increased considerably.

of 1949 as an area ~f 16 milliam hectares more thou during the same period
o: last year. Almost two thirds of spring gloving and almost threw fourths
of fallowing in 1949 vas done by glove with colters.
