Pei-p'ing -- Many educational reform have been carried out in the higher
education program for the Pei-p'ing and Tien-ohing areas. Some schools have
already begun new terns while others are ready to resume classes after sating
may changes in curriculum, faculties, and departments during the summer months.
Recently, a representative of this newspaper visited higher educaticnal
institutions in these areas and made the following report:
Pei-p'ing University
Classes and one department star other schools were transferred and merged
with corresponding classes and dipartment in Pei-p'ing tiversity as follows:
the jurisprudence class of Ch'ing-hum University, the Department of Medicine of
Jranoo-Chinese University, the philosophy class of Nan-t'ai U:iversity, and the
agriculture class of the Department of Agriculture, 1u-jen Universitp-.
The course on eduoa'?Son under the Department of Literature in Pei-p'ing
University Irma transferred and conbined with that of Pei-p'ing Teachers College.
The special oou1ess on the Arabic and Hindustani languages were incorporated
with the special course on Chinese Literature in this university.
The instructors and students of the oriental literature class in Nan-thing
University were transferred and merged with a similar class in Pei-p'ing University.
According to the June 1949 survey, the total enrollment in the university
was 1,970. The new enrollment this year is 1 01''7. The Students who transferred
from other schools number 146 and there are 44 research students.

Of the mare than 6,000 woo appiiet for anrul:imeut this y6ar, about 1,600
applied for the Department of Medicine. Of that number, 110 passed the exami-
nation and were accepted. Sixty students 4ere accepted into the Economies
Department, 50 in the Department of .Agriculture, and 50 in the Department of
Technology.
The English-Ianguage Department was changed to the Foreign Languages De-
partment which includes the English and Russian languages.
The following changes were made in the Department of Education: the hcmae
economics course was changed to child care; manic to drama and music; manual
training to arts and technology; and the special Chinese-language course was in-
corporated with the Chinese literature course.
The total enrollment in this school is 1,591, which iaclud6e 752 new stu-
dents accepted for this tams. Of the new students, 81 enrolled in the Foreign
languages Department, and 63 in the Chinese literature course.
Some students transferred to Pei-p'ing University or changed to other
courses when the jurisprudence course was transferred and merged with that of
the Ylii-p'ing University.
The anthropology course was dropped and its students were transferred to
the Sociology course. Of the 950 students accepted this year, 140 enrolled in
the Department of Chinese Literature, 156 in the Department of Science, 97 in
the Department of Law, 420 in the Department of Technology, and 133 in the De-
partment of Agriculture.
The number of students in each course is as follows: electrical equipment
126, machinery 99, civil engineering 75, chemical engineering 71, foreign liter-
ature 89, agricultural scienoo 58, and agricultural chemistry 61.

''f the four special courses,taught heretofore in this school, only the leather-
craft course was reamed this year. The three courses dropped are pottery miring,
teaching english in middle schools, and statistics.
It requires 330,000 US dollars annually to operate this school. Of that
amount, 250,000 US dollars bave.been raised already.
Yu-den University
The Department of Literature includes Chinese literatuure, foreign literature,
history, sociology, and economics. The anthropology course was dropped this year.
The Department of Science includes courees in mathemative, physics, chemistry,
and biology. The hams economics course was dropped this year. The course on
Hygiene was incoeporated into the biology course; nutrition into the chemistry

The courses on logic and ethics were dropped last semester. The course on
religion was changed from required to elective.
The total enrollment of this school is 1,230. There are 480 new students.
Of the new students, 60 were accepted in economics, 60 in biology, and 48 in
physics.
The tuition is fixed at 60 unite of commodity value established by the COP.
It requires 220,000 IB dollars to operate this school annually.
Pranco-Chinese University
This school was placed under the control of the Military Cortrol Commission
on is j1=0 1949-
Originally, the school had departments of Literature, Science, and Medicine.
The Department of Medicine was transferred and combined with that of Pei-p'ing
University. During the last term, there were 13 students in the Department of
Medicine, 225 in the Department of Literature, and 242 in the Department of
Science. There were also 43 teachers and 27 workers.
The Administration Committee of the university is now busy reorganizing he
curriculum and will receive new students soon.
Jan-t'ai University
The Department of Political Economy was changed to the Department of Jinanoe
and Hoenamiae. The course on politics was dropped. A new course on finance and
econcmioe was started.
In the Department of Literature, the philosophy course was dropped.
Some students have moved to Fsi-ping Teachers College or to Pei-p'ing
University to continue their chosen courses of education or philosophy.
Hopeh Provincial Medical College
Generally, it requires 6 years to graduate from this school. However, the
courses in nursing and obstetrics require only 2 years to finish.
The college has the following laboratories: anatomy, bacteriology, pathology,
histology end embryology, biochemistry, hygiene and preventive medicine, pharea-
cology, and physiology.
There are 124 teachers and workers, 404 old students, and 180 new students.
The new term started offically on 19 October 1949.
Other Schools
The other schools, which have not made many changes, include Psi-yang
University, Hopeh Teachers College, National Art School, and.. the Marine School.
Pei-yang University has 700 etud:nte, of which 399 are now. Fifty-coven
students are taking the course in electrical equipment and 52 that in machinery.

}opeh Teachers College is a coeducational school with 215 students and
30 teachers.
The Narine Science School, also coeducatioaxi, has 170 students.
