In a public address on the Two Year Plan, Fritz Selbmann, Deputy Chairman
of the German Economic Commission, announced increAnoo i,e the prcductica of
iron ore, crude iron, crude steel, and rolling-mill products, amounting to
two, three, and in some instances five times the outp.it of 1946.
He claimed that as the rct=ult of the construction of a new steel plant
and other measures to he taken, the production of the metallurgical industry
would be so greatly expanded that the Increased export of high-value finished
pr&ducto would bring about a significant increase in the import of food sup-
plies, cotton, and other important commodities.

On 22 October 1949, construction began on a new copper-slate shaft in
Sangershausen, the largest copper-slate mining project in Europe. The total
area in which copper slate nc_urs comprises 25.5 million square meters.

The Doehlen Foundries near Dresden have completed and put into operatio;u
the-necoud 10-ton Siemens-Martin furnace. Construction of a rolling mill has
