TO OPEN NEW ORE MINES -- Rad, No 288, 3 Dec 49
Many deposits of limo:aite have been discovered in oouthern Macedonia,
especially at Demir Eisar. 7,.e capacity of the future mine at Demir Eisar
will be equal to tha rapacity of the Vares or the Ljubija mires in Serbia.
Manganese has been discovered at Bistra near Galicnik, in Macedonia,
where the opening of a ^>angynese mine is contemplated.
With the opening and the e_largind of the Mackatica molybdenum mine,
in South Serbia, Yugoslavia wi1.l be one of tre four largest producers o'
molybdenum in the vr`rid. Molybdenum is also found at Mezica (Slovenia);
in Eadt Serbia, and nt Kr,aooik, Serbia.
Chromium deposits have been discovered i_- Southern Macedonia, in Bosnia,
and in the Kosmet. Nickel deposits have been disco?ersd aC several places in
Serbia.
The Bor copper mi.n-e in Serbia is one of the largest in the o:1d. Addi-
tional copper deposits; have been found in the vicinity of the Par mine, in
East Serbia, and at tiajian Pek, Serbi Copper deposits have also been found
in southern Macedonia at Demir ICapija, at the Greek border, to the csutral.
Bosnian mountai-is, at Kopaoajik, Serbia, and at Ekofja Loka, Slovenia.
tugr-lavia is first in Europe and seventh in the world in the production
of lead ore. A lead mine will be opeied near Pristina, Serbia. Deposits of
lead and zinc are also ford. at Padnik, Serbia.

The modern aluminum and alumina fact ry at Strnisce in Slovenia id near-
ing comp.etion and is being equipped with machinery. Some of the structures
will be over 30 meters high. Huge conveyors, which will carry the bauxite
from the ore mills, are ready to start operation. The bauxite storage space,
which will be able to hold restrves for hell e year, has als:o been completed.

from which the "DDjtxc Djaazovic" Enterprise will make 160 more furnaces like
Strniace factory for tanks, reservoirs, and other products. The "Franc
Leskosek" Enterprisc will. make 150 cathodes for the Strnisce factory. Two
A new foundry of the Jastreten Factory in Nis began operation on
ber 1949.

operation of foundries. In addition to the foundry, fitting and blacksmith
shops have also been put into operation, When completed, this training
school will be the largest and most modern in Yugoslavia. At, present, 500
students are being trained here in ferrous metallurgy.
In Javcrnih, Slovenia, a nei rolling :aill belonging to the Jesenice

In 1939, Yuroslav mines produced about 670,000 tons of high-grade iron
ore. In 1951, Yugoslavia expects to produce 512 times as much pig iron and
more than 3 times as much crude steel as in 1939. If the plan for 1951 is
taken as '.OC, the ferrous metals industry reached 21.3 percent in 1946,
47.5 percent in 1947; 71 percent in 1948, and 73.2 percen,: in the first
half of 1949.
According to the plan, the ferrous metals industry should reach 82.2
percent at the end of 1949 and 96.2 percent in 1950. The construction of
many new rolling mills is p_aane'+ for the production of oil pipes, which
will be needed for the con',enp'.at?ed production of 450,000 tons of het. 'leu:a

At the Gustanj Ironworks in Slovenia, new machine shops, a new electric
furnace for the production of high-grade steel, new mechanical fixtures, and
a large forging shop have been added. The new forging shop ro s built above
the old one, which kept on working during the construction period.

On 29 Noiember 1949, a new fa:::tory for sheet-metal products began
operation in Kocoveka Nitrovica, Serbia. The machinery for this factory
was made In Yugoslavia.
