M1l:tary '.sses in the Northwest exceeded the highest expectations. Since 13 ay when ,cur forces occupied Hsi-an in Shensi Province, we were able to _hoerate el', flvro Northwest prov'rces within a 6-month period. The r.:;rga:,1_a?1cr. of the former KMT troops in the Pamir mountain range in Sinkiang the Twenty-second Army Group of the People's Liberation Army is progressing smncth_y. This group is to be made up of the Ninth Army and the 7th and 8th Cavalry tovisions and will be commanded by General T'ao Chih-yueh (Ueda 12686, 3173, 2059)former KMT general who defected to the Communists with Gover- nor Burhan. The Si_r:kleag Pe.ip_e's Army which was formed during the KMT regime by dis- sident gro.ps whc .:r.p-sed imperialism and WT rule has beer, reorganized into the Fifth Army of the People's Liberation Army. This army is now cooperating with our Fir;?, ?r::o Gr.,np in carrying out duties throughout Sinkiang. - Before the KNIT reactionaries retreated, they carefully organized guerrilla units throaghost the area to carry out subversive act'.vities. Although more than 60,000 of thcs?.: band is have beer. captured already, it is estimated that there are still some 10,000 operating in the Northwest.
