Vechernyaya Moskva, Moscow -- No 272, 17 Nov 49
October weather in 1949 was exceptionally warm. The first snowfall occurred
on 17 October, 5 days later than usual, and was followed by a warm spell. Octo.
her 27, 1949, was the warmest day for this date recorded in the Moscow area dur-
ing the pat 70 years. Two days following this, it began to drizzle and by
morning of 30 October wet snow was falling. No strong frosts occurred during
either October or November.
The average temperature for the Moscow area during November 1949 was 2.3
degrees below zero. The highest temperature for this region was 2.7 degrees above
zero, recorded in 1923, and the lowest, 7.9 degrees below zero recorded in 1919.
The highest daytime temperature was 12.6 degrees above zero in 1927, and the
lowest was 32.8 degrees below zero in 1890. The driest month recorded was Novem-
ber 1890, when there were 10 millimeters of precipitation instead of the usual 38.
Szabad Szo, Budapest -- No 278, 30 Nov 49
At the last meeting of the Natural Science Society, Andor Csaplak reported
on meteorological research in the USSR. He said that, at the end of the current
Five-Year Plan, the USSR will have 10,034 completely equipped weather reporting
stations, and 24,856 smaller stations. The stations use aircraft, pilot bal-
loons, and free balloons to study the atmosphere and to render more detailed and
accurate weather reports than ever before.
The USSR has completed a climate atlas consisting of 380 large scale maps
and showing the average climate data for all areas of the USSR. These are of
great importance not only to flying and navigation but also to agriculture.
Soviet scientists are searching for the cheapest method for prevention of
frost damage. Likewise, the scientists aid irrigation by forecasting the level
of the Caspian Sea a year in advance.
