DIGEST OF "EXPERIMENTAL CAVES
IN THE PERMAFROST LAYER NEAR IGARKA" BY V. F. TUMEL'
The introduction reveals the following information:
Extensive work on the construction of caves in the permafrost layer for re-
frigeration purposes was organized in 1936 at the Igarka Permafrost Station of the
Institute of Permafrost Studies. The experimental work was initially conducted by
P. I. Mel'nikov and later by L. A. Meyster and V. F. Tumel'. The first small ex-
perimental cave-storehouse (22 cubic meters) was constructed at the beginning of
1936. Construction of a second larger cave (468 cubic meters) was initiated at the
end of 1936; this work was finished in the spring of 1941. This book is devoted
to the description of the construction of these caves and the studies made in them.

Chapter V includes the following data:
The author lists some of the possible applications of underground caves in the
permafrost layer, i.e., in connection with low-.temperatures studies, as museums or
medical institutions for the storage of various serums and biologicals, and as re-
positories for commercial storage of meat, fish, and fresh vegetables.
The construction of a small cave in the permafrost layer at the airport of the
village of Anadyr (Chnkotsk Peninsula) in 1942 is noted. This cave was constructed
in winter mainly by blasting. Subsequently the trenches were roofed with wooden
flooring and covered with fresh earth. There is no data on the exploitation of
this cave. This is one of three caves constructed besides the ones at Igarka, the
other two being a storehouse (400 cubic meters) of the "Rybolovpotrebsoyuz" in the
village of ) usyur on the Lena River constructed in 1942 and a fish storehouse of
a cannery in Usti-Port on the Yenisey River constructed in 1932.
