MILITARY AUTHORITIES RUSH KWANGLUNG HIGHWAY REPAIR;
RR SEI1 TTHROUGII TICKET3, KUAHG-CHOU--PEI-P'IRG
MCC PUSHES REPAIRS ON KUANG-CHOU HIGHWAY -- Hong Kong Hsin-sheng Jib-pao,
23 Feb 50:
Hong Kong -- Rapid progress has been made in carrying out the orders
of the Khang-chou Military Control Commission, issued near the end of Janu-
ary 1950, to rush repairs on the Kuang-chou-.Shen-ch'uan section of the
Kuang-thou--Hong Kong highway. The reason for the rush order is to provide
usable highway connections with Hong Kong in case the Chinese section of
the Kuang-thou--Chiu-lung Railroad, or any of its bridges, should be put
out of commission by Nationalist bombing units.
All highway bridges between Tung-kuan (Ueda: 4765, 9880) and Shen-
ch'uan have now been repaired or strengthened so as to be passable for
loaded 3j ton trucks. It is reported that the Kwangtung authorities are
considering trying to reach an agreement with the Hong Kong authorities
for through motor-truck transportation, without transshipment, in both
directions across the boundary separating the two areas. Chinese merchants
are such concerned over this matter. According to their views, since the
volume of goods at present being moved from Hong Kong to Kuang-chou is
greater than that n the reverse direction, in case it should be impossible
to arrange for full' reciprocity, then the Kwangtung authorities should agree
to a one-sided arrangement permitting trucks licensed in Hong Kong to oper-
ate across the boundary in Kwangtung.
Many Hong Kong merchants consider that goofs from Hong Kong destined
for Kuang-chop need not be carried all the way by motor truck, but at Shih-
lung or Tung-kuan they could be loaded on river steamers for the rest of
the Jour.iey. While the cost of such a combination of transport, including
-transshipment charges, might be greater than all-rail transport without
transshipment, nevertheless it would be cheaper than all-truck transport
'and safer than all-rail transport, since motor trucks can operate singly
and.river steamers can travel at night.

KWAECTUEG HIGHWAY BRIDGE REPAIRS BEING RUSHED -- Hong Kong Kung-ehang
Jih-pao, 25 Feb 50
Hui-yang, 24 February -- Repairs on the provincial trunk motor road
No 2 from Kuang-chou through Tseng-ch'eng to Hui-yang, Ho-yuan, and other
points in the Tung Chiang valley are being rushed. Although the newly
conktructed ferryboat landings at Teeng-ch'eng take care of the traff~c
from Hui-yang and the Yang-ta'un districts, there are many bridges still
out in the vicinity of Ping-ling, Pu-ch'ien and Hs:._-ho-pu. Hence,
public buses cannot operate through services, and traffic must rely
largely on military transport facilities. The local governments of more-
than.ten bsien, including Po-lo, Teeng-ch'eng, Lung-men, and Ho-yuan,
have been ordered to cooperate with the Tung Chiang Highway Engineering
Btula.. ay mobilizing the people along the way in order to complete the
repairs by 15 March 1950.
