OF PAGES 2 SUPPLEMENT TO REPORT NO. THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION TO PRODUCE NEW PHARMACEUTICALS PLANT EXPANDED -- Thueringische Landeszeitung, No 1, 3 Jan 50 Outstanding achievements in pharmaceutical production are expected from the people-owned Promossol plant in Erfurt, which recently absorbed the former Lessing-Chemie chemical plant: The enterprise is best known as the producer of the'patent preparations Lepitoin and Evosin. The plant's research laboratory, under the direction of Doctor (fnu) Luther, has developed other important pharmaceuticals, production of which is planned in the near future. One of these medications is Dehydrocol, a bile acid preparation made from an extract of bile secretions taken from slaughtered animals; it is used as a cure for diseases of the gall bladder and liver. The pure dehydrocol acid produced in Erfurt is also obtainable in ampules for use in injections. In this form the preparation can be used with good results in the treatment of a number of coronary diseases, such as angina pectoris. It is of particular interest that the substance will dissolve tuberculosis bacilli, which should make it valuable as an aid in the treatment of tuberculosis. Another pharmaceutical to be produced by the Promossol plant in the near future is Dicumarol, an anticoagulation vitamin which prevents clotting of the blood. Dicumarol can be produced simply and inexpensively and is of great value to the surgical profession as an effective preventive of throm- bosis. Production of anthelmintics is also scheduled to start soon. As a result of postwar conditions, every fourth person in Soviet Zone Germany] is infected with worms. This disease is steadily increasing be- cause no effective remedy has been made available thus far. The Promossol plant has succeeded in developing Viocid, a harmless preparation based on gentian violet, an effective but not entirely nonpoisonous medication developed in the US. Because Viocid is effective only against maggots and not against other ascaridic parasites, the plant has developed a second remedy, hexylresorcin, which is equally effective against both types of Norms. Mass production will begin after clinical investigations are made. According to the Director General, ex- periments in manuf;.cturing such chemicals and concentrates from domestic raw materials have been successful. Preliminary export negotiations with Belgium and some of the South American countries indicate good sales possi- bilities. Within the scope of this program, Variochem-Fotografika will increase its production of photographic papers for export. It is also anticipated that a profitable business will be done with color films, and increased production of both edible and photographic gelatines is planned, together with an in- crease in the production of water glass. In the Finowtal Chemical Factory a camphor plant is to be installed dur- ing the current year, to supply the photographic industry with its require- ments of camphor, which are now being covered by imports. - 2 - CONFIDENTIAL Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/09/08: CIA-RDP80-00809A000600300298-8
