SAYS AIR FORCE, NAVY BEING ENLARGED -- Hong Kong Shih-pao, 4 Mar 50
Taihoku, 2 March -- Premier Yen Hsi-shan, speaking at the Legislative. Yuan,
today warned that the Communist air force and navy are being greatly enlarged.
He said that they now have about 200 Russian-made planes and several submarines.
LARGE OXYGEN PURCHASES INDICATE USE IN SUBMARINES -- Hong Kong Hsin-sheng Wan-
pao, 5 Mar 50
The owner of a large chemical products plant in Hong Kong revealed that,
in October 1949, he had received from North China two orders for liquid oxygen
and compound nitrate. Each order amounted to 200,000 US dollars. However, he
did not have stocks on hand at that time, nor could he get them from the US, so
he purchased them from companies in Czechoslovakia and West Germany, and deliv-
ered them to Tsingtao in February 1950.
He stated that, according to a Czech military scientist, the principal use
of liquid oxygen, other than a small amount used in hospitals, is in the opera-
tion of submarines, and that the amount he delivered was enough to operate 40
submarines for 2 weeks or 20 submarines for one month. The compound nitrate,
which is an imperative ingredient for producing smoke screens, is believed to
be for use in the invasion of Taiwan.
COMMUNIST GUERRILLAS JOIN PRO-KMT GUERRILLAS -- Hong Kong Kung-shang Jih-pao,
3 Mar 50
Shan-wei, 2 March -- According to a reliable source, three groups of about
500, 300, and 400 Communist guerrillas in Lu-feng and Hai-feng hsiens in the
southeastern section of Kwangtung Province, disgusted with the treatment they
had been getting from the Communist Forty-First Army which dominates the same
areas, broke away from the CCP and joined pro-KMT guerrilla forces to broaden
anti-Communist activities.

Lu-feng Helen, and about 1,000 Communist guerrillas under his command, have
also joined pro-K) guerrillas recently because of their dissatisfaction with
the attitude of the Communist Army.
STUDENTS FLEE TO AVOID CONSCRIPTION -- Hong Kong Shih-pao, 5 Mar 50
Taihoku, 4 March -- A recent arrival from Peiping has revealed that up
to the time of his departure, the Chinese Communist Party, which must rend 5
million Chinese laborers to the USSR, was able to assemble only 450,000 per-
sons. As a result, to avoid being accused by the Russians of not fulfilling
their promise, the CCP has proclaimed that all men between the ages of 15 and
45, who are not in labor forces approved by the CCP, are subject to conscrip-
tion for this purpose.
When this proclamation was announced, the students in various high schools
and colleges in Peiping and Tientsin, fearing the consequence of conscripted
labor, began fleeing into areas held by anti-Ccamunist guerrillas.
FORMER KMT OFFICIALS BEING EXILED -- Hong Kong Kung-shang Jih-pao, 25 Feb 50
Taihoku, 24 February -- A KMT source reported that thousands of former
KW government officials who defected to the Communists are now being exiled
to Siberia and Sinkiang by the CCP authorities for the purpose of colonizing
the vast wastelands in these areas.
